Our stay at Bab Al Shams resort and spa was wonderful. We spent two nights in this wonderful place and we had an amazing time. Everything about this resort is beautiful: the setup, the rooms and the mood. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The kids too had an amazing time and enjoyed the activities provided by the resort. If I have to give a comment, it will be about the food: the food is ok and could be improved. Collapse

To start with - forget about all the nice pictures of sand dunes you see in the advertisements of the hotel - they are no where near the hotel. So the setting is quite different to what I expected. I posted a picture of the resort when you approach it on the street. It's far away from anything - Taxis need to be preordered at least one hour, fare to Dubai City is AED 200, one way. Now you say I knew that when I booked and you are right - but as the "real desert" feeling I expected was missing, it just felt like there is no point for being so far away from anything. Check in was a bad start as it took forever, they had a wrong room rate and were just interested in getting our money instead of sorting this later (we stayed for a couple of days) The entrance, outdoor areas and public areas of the hotel are quite nice, a lot of seating areas, all in arabian style. The rooms however (at least our Junior Suite 149) are dated, smell dump, are dark and not welcoming. I'm all in for authentic, traditional decoration - but it is still a 5 Star hotel - so you can't just put up anything on the wall - it also has to fulfil aesthetic aspects. The layout of the room is not practical at all - you lose a lot of space with "hallways' you cannot use, the (super small) wardrobe is inside the bathroom as is the toilet. Our terrace had the nice view to the parking lot (ironic). The food was a hit and miss. Breakfast ok, not the best quality, and you had to watch the chef cook your eggs, otherwise he would either forget or make them wrong. The Italian restaurant is a disaster. No ambience at all (they use empty bottles in the bar as decoration), waiting 50 minutes for the food due to some issues and then it was mediocre at best. They have an obligatory NYE Dinner Party prices at AED 1500, which is a lot, and we were not told anything than that is is obligatory (which per se I feel very strange about in a 5 star hotel). So we went there at 7 to have dinner and then go to bed early as we were jetlaged - only to be told that it only starts at 8 and we did not have a reservation. So off we went, and Hany, the Restaurant Manager of Al Fasan helped us out, made an exception for us, allowed us to order some food a la carte, and at 9 we were in bed. It took us several days until we got a meeting with Mr Aghoury the Hotel Manager (as it seems the Manager on Duty did not take us seriously, and we regret that we did not push earlier to have that meeting as Mr Aghoury understood immediately, waived the charges for the NYE Dinner, apologised and we had a nice chat. He even sent a cake to our room in the shape of a golf course since we told him we played golf during our stay. While we much appreciated his reaction, it is not enough to have us raving about the hotel and our stay there. Collapse

Wonderful hotel with the most amazing service. It is built along the lines of an old fort, so there are many little steps and corridors which give it an intimate feel. Rather dark in places and the bedroom could do with a little more lighting. Perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and just relax with good pools and sunloungers. We went mid week, but I imagine that the pool areas and sunloungers might get rather busy at peak times, which would not be to my liking. The restaurants and bars are quite expensive but we were offered a 'drinks package' option at the Al Hadeerah restaurant which was worthwhile. It is worth going to the Al Hadeerah because even though it is quite 'touristy' with the entertainment, there is a lovely atmosphere and a very extensive choice of food. Just be careful to walk around and see what is on offer before you head up to the buffet to help yourself. The buffet breakfast at the Al Forsan has an excellent selection, the lunch we had there, however, was somewhat disappointing. My Caesar Salad had no croutons and was just lots of dark leaves with shrimp and a rather bland dressing, and my husband was told that he could not have his burger medium/rare, as all burgers had to be medium/well done. Consequently, it was overcooked and not that great. Collapse

We had an amazing stay at this resort, and the only regret is that we didn't stay longer. Everything about our stay in this hotel was just great. Service, room itself, dinner at Al Hadheerah all surpassed all expectations. Only exception was service by the pool, we could not getting anyones attention for an hour to try and get a drink, whilst all the staff were just chatting by the bar. It was also great to meet the falcons and see them fly, such beautiful birds. Seeing the camels at sunset coming from the desert was a pretty sight but made me feel very sorry for them giving continues rides to people. We did enjoy a memorable dinner at Al Hadheerah Restaurant, it was a bit pricey but food was delicious... If you enjoy nice middle eastern food, this place will definitely make you happy. You could also meet the falcons here, or go on a short camel ride, but its the same as what you get to see at 4.30pm near the pool. We also went on a desert safari which goes for about an hour, it was great fun to go dune bashing in an open 4WD and see some local wildlife. Overall, this was a memorable experience and I hope we do get to come back for a longer stay next time. Collapse

Amazing and breathtaking stay at Bab Al Shams, high quality standards and peaceful. The swimming pool is a must, so beautiful with the view on the desert, it's probably one of the best in Dubai. I highly recommend it without any doubt.
