We visited for the long weekend due to the National Day holiday in the UAE. We drove up from Abu Dhabi. The resort is very easy to find and a short drive (around an hour) from Dubai and Abu Dhabi alike. I am an expedia VIP member but thanks to the hotel being fully booked, they weren't able to give me an upgrade. However, I did get a 25% discount for the spa. We had a room on the ground floor with a small sit-out facing east. The sunrise and sunsets are quite spectacular. The room was very tastefully decorated with a very nice bathtub + shower. Room amenities are fairly standard that you would find in any other resort. One notices immediately that the resort is quite close to the city as some traffic can be observed on the nearby road that goes to Dubai Endurance city. There are stables and camel farms nearby along with an artificial lake. There are some wild gazelle and Arabian Oryx near the resort and I was lucky to see them in the evening. Instead of booking horse riding through the hotel, you can go directly to the stables and book it at half the price. There is a morning drive in a 4x4 to see the sunrise, which is fantastic but one needs to book in advance as its very popular. However, they can only book the entire 4x4 which is very expensive if you are only a small group. The hotel has a very nice pool. We had drinks and dinner in the Al Sarab rooftop restaurant each night. On they weekend they do a very nice fireworks display in the next door Al Hadeerah restaurant. The hotel allows walk in guests in Al Sarab so it gets very busy on the weekend with live music. However, they do assign priority to hotel guests and the restaurant manager was very kind to accomodate us on a priority basis. Their indian restaurant is quite nice and particular mention must be made of Mr.Vishnu who was very helpful. The resort is quite small compared to the other desert resorts in the UAE. Therefore, the rooms seem quite close to each other and it can get a bit noisy in the evening. The sitouts are also not fully private as all of them connect to a common green patch and are separated only by half a wall. Evenso, we didn't face any problems as such. If you can, ask for a room on the first floor as the view would be better. The spa is a dissappointment. My wife went to the spa in the evening and the therapist seemed to be in a rush as it was near her closing time. Its a cramped, noisy space and not a great experience. Collapse

Having researched desert resorts near Dubai for a day visit we chose Bab al Shams for 5 adults and a 3 year old. The daily rate at 375 dirhams each sounds expensive but the 3 year old was free and all the adults thought it was a fabulous day and actually very good value. The facilities for adults and children are incredible and the location is stunning. The highlights of the day were the staff, who were charming and faultless, and the lunch, which was absolutely delicious. The inclusive lunch is an extensive buffet with an amazing range of hot and cold food. Drinks, including water, are not included and are the usual Dubai prices...so not cheap but, considering the amazing location, not outrageously so. It is impossible to find fault with the resort: a beautifully located and expertly run hotel staffed by charming people. We had a wonderful and memorable day. Thank you. Collapse

My husband and I recently stayed for 3 nights following on from a 4 night stay in Dubai City. This was our third visit to Dubai and I wanted to experience the desert and see a different side to the country. It took approx an hour to get there from our hotel out on the palm and enabled us to see the changing landscape along the way. The welcome and check in procedure was easy and although our room wasn't ready until 3pm we were able to use all the facilities. We had a terrace room which was lovely and in keeping with the hotel appearance. It felt like going into our own little cave and was very cosy although not in a small way! The hotel itself appears like a fort in a desert oasis and all the buildings/rooms are very much in keeping with this. The bed was very comfortable and there was a small sitting area both in the room and outside on the terrace. Bathrobes, slippers and toiletries were provided, along with tea, coffee, bottled water and fruit. Daily newspapers were supplied and housekeeping were always on hand if required. The pool area is lovely and consists of 3 different sections, one for children, one with jacuzzis and one with a swim up pool bar. There were also plenty of sunbeds and shades, with towels provided. We were staying on a half board option so had breakfast each morning in the Al Forsan restaurant. We also ate here 2 evenings. The food was excellent with plenty of choice. We also had a meal in Masala, the Indian restaurant. This had a lovely setting within a courtyard of the hotel and again the food again was excellent. Our favourite place to spend the evening was in Al Sarab, the rooftop lounge, where you could watch the beautiful sunsets. Most evenings there was live entertainment and with lots of locals enjoying parties/ nights out this gave a fun atmosphere. My husband enjoyed sampling the Shisa pipes with the help of Mohammed "Shisa"! Be aware that the restaurants do get busy at the weekends and booking is advisable. Daily complementary camel rides and a falcon display were offered which we enjoyed. We then booked an hours camel ride at sunset which was fun, enabling us to experience the desert and see some of the oryx which live there. Other activities on offer included biking, horse riding and jeep safaris. This is a fun and relaxed place to stay with families with young children being well catered for. I would definitely recommend this hotel for a short break. Collapse
