We stayed at Bab al Shams Desert Resort for one night in December with our family (a party of 8 adults and 3 children) and it was a really disappointing stay. There is nothing wrong with the hotel itself. The location is perfect, in the desert; the setting is beautiful; nice swimming pools; excellent restaurants; plenty of activities (camel ride, desert safari, archery...). The gym was below standards (a few cardio machines and free weights), but nothing unreasonable. The rooms are large, rustic but comfortable keeping up with the theme of the hotel. Comfortable beds and linens, nice bathroom and amenities. However, when it comes to service, this was one of the worse managed properties I have stayed in my life. We had problems in every single exchange we had with everyone we got in contact in the hotel (except the bell person Rahid who was very attentive). I am not blaming the staff for the poor service, as I believe this comes from management - it must be from the top, since the profile of th e staff is very similar to every other hotel in Dubai, with people from India, Pakistan, Egipt, Phillippines... Poor management and staff training made our stay a disaster from check-in to check-out and I am not exaggerating. Check-in took us over 45 minutes! There was a problem with our reservation; our booking with booking.com included breakfast, but their system it didn't show this information). Despite me showing (and sending) them the email confirmation from booking they would not release us the room before resolving this issue. They insisted we had to contact booking to resolve this issue which I refused. This is a five star resort, and I expect 5 star service. I asked them to contact booking and resolve the issue with them. This took for ever and of course we were losing patience. Any other 5 star hotel would have had us checked in, resolved this issue, and informed us of the outcome. From there, things only went downhill. The feeling we had was that their staff were doing us a favour for serving us, as if were being a nuisance to them. There were flies everywhere and we noticed they had some repellent incense, so we asked them to bring one closer to where we were. Reluctantly they did it. They offered mini-golf, but there was no one around with golf clubs and balls. In the morning, one of our kids was still sleeping and we wouldn't wake up before breakfast, so we wanted to take a bowl of cereal from the buffet breakfast to our room. We weren't allowed! This no can't do attitude was found everywhere in this hotel. Notice that I didn't say I wanted to take it for free. It was just assumed that. Plus, we were 11 people having breakfast, and in any other hotel this would never have been an issue. To close the experience the worst possible way, right after checked out, with a bill of over USD3,000 for one night (including food), one person in our party bought a pack of M&Ms from their convenience store. Since we had checked out already, and she didn't have the wallet on her, she told the staff that she would get the USD5.00 from her husband. The sales staff said she would hold her suitcase until she paid! This is definitely not how you treat guests in a 5 star resort. These were just a few of the instances I can remember, but there were others. Maybe we are spoiled. We had just spend 6 nights at the Jumeirah Dar al Masyaf where everyone was extremely courteous and attentive. This is the kind of treatment we expected at Bab al Shams, specially after reading the reviews on tripadvisor. That said, it was worth it visiting the hotel, but I would recommend making it a day trip with dinner at their Al Hadeehrah restaurant which was an amazing experience, with great food and entertainment. Don't bother staying there and save yourself the aggravation. Trust me, you will get much better service in any other 5 star resort in Dubai. Collapse

Visited the restaurant part of this resort so I have not stayed at the hotel, hence this will not be a review of the hotel per se! The setting is fairytale like and very accommodating as well as the staff there and very suitable for everyone (be it couples, singles families or friends)! Positives: - wide range of food selection with Arabic, Persian, Mediterranean and seafood! - nice settings of tables and table spread of appetizers - you get individually escorted from the entrance to your seat by a personal escort that gives you an option to have a quick tour before you sit at your table. If you get this choice, take it! You get a good idea of where everything is found (food wise) and a private tour of the restaurant - good selection of beverages - delicious food with a show while you eat Negatives: - we had to wait quite a bit for the restaurant to be ready for our entrance (even though it was a preset time on their part) - the seating arrangements were a bit illogical and random as we were not asked where we preferred sitting but just taken to a, by the waiter chosen, seat - I’ve been to one of these events before this where there was a show and it honestly feels like it’s the same poor guy who keeps spinning and spinning until YOU throw up (cause he sure doesn’t seem like to)! - if you’re looking for a private peaceful dinner this is not for you, unless you manage to do one of the following: 1. Find a table way in the back somewhere 2. Crawl under the table really fast (could get a bit messy and attract more attention as it might trigger them to target you harder) 3. Never break eye contact with the table cloth/your food regardless if the spinning guy with his skirt spinning above his head is sitting in your lap! 4. Pretend you’re all of the sudden in a very lively and fascinating conversation with whom ever you’re accompanying at the dinner (if you’re there alone you better hope you’re neighbor is friendly and welcoming to your sudden approaches)! (If you manage to come up with better ways please let me know as I’m running out of ideas) Summary: This was an absolutely delightful dinner evening with good food, good accommodation, good service and a pleasant desert experience! Highly recommended to family, friends, couples and anyone who is looking for a good time! Collapse
