Things started off well with a prompt reply to an email request, friendly/helpful reception staff & a great sized room but it all went down hill from there. Upon arrival, my myself & a friend went down to the bar for dessert but it is lucky we weren't overly hungry as the portion size was tiny. €5.50 for a credit card sized slice of apple tart. Later that evening, we went down for dinner and again ate in the bar as the restaurant was closed. i got the "hot" chicken wings but the only thing "hot" about these was the temperature because the sauce was an extremely bland sweet chilli sauce and I couldn't even finish them as the skin was like jelly. My friend got the chicken curry & could barely eat hers either as the chicken was chewy and tasteless & made her feel queasy. After a long wait for our plates to be cleared, I informed the manager of our problem & asked if we could order something else. He handed us the menu & strolled off without apology. We were then told by the bar man that we could have a cocktail or a dessert on the house but would still have to pay for the original meal.I went ahead and ordered a cocktail but it just tasted like watered down juice. The next morning we went down for breakfast, a breakfast that may well have been non- existent. The selection of offer was at the bare minimum, there was a machine for making pancakes that wasn't even switched on and the hot food looked like it had been sitting there for weeks. Any tables that had been used so far that morning were still covered in dirty dishes while 2 staff members swanned in and out of the kitchen doing sweet F.A. These 2 seemed to be away with the fairies & we had to stand around near the kitchen door and wait for them come to back out so that we could order coffee as there was no hope of them coming near our table to take an order. Incompetent would be putting it lightly! We ended up having to go to Supervalu next door to get a decent breakfast... I then went for a facial and massage in Zen Beauty. The massage bed was "dressed" in 2 rough hotel towels with 1 towel on top to cover the client, definitely not what would be expected from anywhere let alone a 4 star hotel. I was freezing throughout, especially my feet as the towel wasn't even long enough to reach that far and I'm only 5' 4"! Surely you can invest in some decent bed coverings/blankets?! The massage itself wasn't relaxing at all, the therapist had hard skin on her fingers which dragged on my skin & there must be a shortage of oil in the salon because very little was used and it soaked into my skin very quickly so I was basically getting a dry rub massage. The most basic of massage routine was used which made it feel like I was being treated by a student in their first week of training and not by a seasoned professional. I was not asked what type of pressure I would like used for the massage or if the pressure was OK throughout, this is a very standard question to ask, especially considering it was noted on my consultation form that I suffer with back pain. No questions were asked regarding the back pain (e.g. if more attention/care was needed in certain areas). Wasn't even offered a drink of water at the end, again, a very basic standard step that should follow any treatment of that nature. A light lunch voucher was given as part of the deal but, following the previous experiences we had on our stay, I refused to even use the voucher & instead chose to once again venture next door to Supervalu for a roll. It's not often that I can afford to treat myself to massages etc. so when I do I expect them to be enjoyable/relaxing/beneficial and this was none of these. I'm disgusted that my hard earned money was wasted here. The swimming pool, including the kids pool, was freezing, there's no way I would have been able to bring my baby for a swim there and the women's changing room toilets were filthy! I used the jacuzzi bath in room 226 and had to force open the plug to drain the water. When it did eventually drain, there was black mucky residue left behind which I can only presume came from the jets. We had planned to make a cup of tea in the room but the amount of limescale in the kettle was disgusting, it had built up so much that it was flaking off & floating in the water. I really could go on and on here but I won't, as it's safe to say the last couple of days have been ruined enough by our stay here and we most certainly won't be back. Collapse

We went on a Pamper Break bought as a birthday present. Such a disappointment! The hotel is showing its age and has many shortcomings. We were "lucky" our room overlooked a Volvo garage and car park. Many of the other rooms had a much worse view i.e. peoples rear gardens or an industrial type of view. The lobby area lacked any atmosphere or style. The bedroom was spacious but needed updated and had curtain hanging of the rail. Very small TV. It had a pathetic piece of artwork on the wall which should have been dumped years ago. Good bathroom which needed a deep clean. Poor lighting in bedroom. We expected to have dinner in the Cedar Restaurant but this is not generally open during the weekdays during the winter months so we had to have dinner in the Cedar Bar. Not conducive to having a quiet dinner in nice surroundings. The bar is not big so on the Sunday night there was over spill into the lobby area which was cold and drafty. In a four star hotel there should be a suitable area for residents to enjoy a pleasant eating experience. The bar area would need a good freshening up. Furniture including tables need cleaning or replacement As regards the dinner the food was not very appetising and in addition was served on an ice cold plate. We both had warm apple tart for dessert which was limp and seemed to be micro waved. The soup starter was lukewarm. As regards the breakfast on the first morning. What a disappointment. No-one to greet you, just go in and find your own table. Later on someone will appear to see what you want for your cooked breakfast. This came and was reasonable except for the hash browns which were a dripping in oil. Not nice. The second morning it was a buffet breakfast. A selection of dried up cooked food sitting out too long. Breakfast plates sitting on table, cold. Tea/coffee dispensed from flasks. Surely in a four star hotel tea/coffee should be brought freshly prepared to the table. The menu said there was a continental breakfast available. This was limited to say the least. No hams or salami, no cheeses etc such as you would expect in a four star hotel. There was a selection of fruit but not much variety. The only fresh fruit available was cut up oranges and a bowl of fruit salad. Guests had to make their own toast which is not a problem however the toaster had an accumulation of toasted bread crumbs and obviously had not been cleaned for weeks or months. The breakfast experience was very poor. In addition the staff in this area, whilst pleasant enough need training and guidance from management. The overall appearance of the Cedar Restaurant is unappealing and it is need of refurbishment. Some of the chairs are disgusting. The Hairs. On the first night my wife found a hair at the bottom of the side salad after most of it had been consumed. This was pointed out to the waiter who simply said "Oh!" and away he went. Next morning at breakfast.........another hair on one of the plates. Is there a cat roaming around? We had stayed two nights and decided enough was enough and decided to cut short our break and go home. We asked to see a manager and did have a meeting with the General Manager to whom we give a run-down of our experience. He listened to what we said and appeared to take our points on board. In conclusion I would rate our experience of this hotel as very poor and under no circumstances would I return. Massive work is required to bring this hotel up to anything approaching four stars. This means on staff training as well as on the decor, furniture etc. As stated above the pamper package poor and not worth the money. Collapse

We stay one night in athlone springs and the reception was very welcoming , zen beauty gave great massages and good leisure centre. However, we were very disappointed with the level of cleaniness in the room and table service which didn't demonstrate the traits of a four star room. We were surprised to find that table in the bedroom was still dirty and that we had no control over the heating and had to keep the window open ( which was very difficult to open) I didn't expect much with a view but it faced onto the back of supermarket and woke us up early with the sounds from the supermarket. We had dinner in the bar as the restaurant was not opened, the staff were nice but lack proper training in table service, the tables were not cleaned properly. We were very disappointed in breakfast, there was no appearance of any staff for ages and the poached egg was basically hard egg. I had tried some brown bread but there was green spots in it , unsure what it contained, i asked the waiter was the bread meant to have the green spots and he was unsure and suggested I could have other bread. The reception told me later that it was supposed to be that. It is disappointing surprising for a four star hotel that waiter didn't know if what they were serving. We would reluctant to stay there again Collapse

Stayed here last month with my Best Friend. We had an escapes voucher which was very good deal. It was 1 Night B&B for 2, Complimentary Cocktail, 10% off Spa & Late Checkout! I was delighted that the hotel could accommodate us arriving early! The room was just standard but nice although the TV was so small. We used the Zen spa, on arrival the receptionist had mentioned appointments are normally to be made 2 weeks in advance which is crazy! We got one anyways thankfully but couldn’t get a slot together which was a bit of a let down. The highlight of the entire stay had to be our evening meal. Special mention to Stephen in the bar. He couldn’t have been nicer, nothing was too much hassle and he’s a credit to the hotel. As a vegetarian I find it hard to go somewhere that doesn’t have the standard veg curry as it’s easy to throw chicken into it. But this hotel had a Sweet Potato & Chickpea Korma and I’ve never tasted anything nicer! Would even love a recipe Breakfast the next morning wasn’t great there wasn’t much selection left but it was close to the finishing time so it was our own fault. And lastly there is a bus stop outside the hotel and our taxi cost us about €15 to city. I look forward to returning. Collapse
