The position of the hotel was excellent and it was clean and comfortable sadly it was let down by the reception staff. They were without exception obviously wishing they were somewhere else. I lost my credit card and the number in the hotel information proved to be unobtainable, I reported to the reception only to be met with a classic Italian shrug and so spent four days worrying that someone was using my card. The cleaning staff and the restaurant staff by contrast were all very pleasant and helpful. Collapse

This hotel was just about what I expected. No frills but an excellent location. Tough to find a better price this close to Saint Mark's square and all the sights. This would probably be a two star hotel in most places but given the price value and the acceptable service, I'll rate it as a three. If you're looking for something more exclusive in this area, be ready to pay out the you know what. Collapse
Great location, but loud

Great location near San Marco square, but don't think about sleeping in as the bells from San Marco ring at 7:00am. Air conditioning could be better, very humid in rooms. Friendly staff, made us feel welcome.

No heat or air, less than helpful staff. Look elsewhere

My wife and I stayed in the Hotel Albergo San Marco during our recent trip to Venice. From check-in to check-out, our stay was littered with negative experiences. On arrival, we were greeted by Laura, who was extremely friendly and courteous. We were off to a good start! She was very personable and told us of the details of our stay, the wifi information, and the breakfast hours. She told us that we had a very nice room on the first floor with a canal view, and we were excited to see what was in store. On entering our room, we were immediately greeted by a horrible smell (my wife dubbed it "dead people smell," and I can't entirely disagree.) The bed mattress sloped in the middle on my side and was very uncomfortable. The bathroom toilet dripped constantly. To give credit where it is due, the room had lovely views of the canal from a bedroom and bathroom window. The wifi in the room was spotty at best. It was very difficult to maintain a reliable connection while looking up flight and transport information or booking tickets for activiites throughout the city. The breakfast was included, but was poor. I am personally a big fan of hotel breakfasts, and throughout the years I don't know that I've ever had the difficulty of finding anything positive to say about at least one breakfast item served. But again, Albergo San Marco was a first in this department. Our stay was in Early May, and the weather was very cool and almost cold the first couple of days. I attempted to turn the heat on in the room, only to find that it didn't work. I went downstairs to address the issue with staff, who stated, "None of our rooms have air conditioning." I replied that the air conditioning was fine, but our heater wasn't working, to which they responded, "Oh yes, there are no heaters. We have blankets in the room." There were 2 thin blankets in the room, which we made use of the 1st night. The next morning, the cleaning staff had removed the blankets. When I asked the front staff for replacements, they had difficulty finding any and eventually brought 1 (not 2) to the room, which I gave to my wife. I covered up with a spare duvet cover from the wardrobe. Thankfully the weather improved, and I didn't catch pneumonia. Again to give credit where it is due, the location of the hotel is phenomenal. We were literally less than a minute's walk from Piazza San Marco and the Basilica. We were also located on a main thoroughfare, making travel on foot throughout the city very accessible. I am not a pessimist, and my wife and I greatly enjoyed our trip to Venice and our adventure together. We loved the city, the weather improved and overall I have fond memories of the trip. But in fairness to my integrity and in warning to future travelers, this was one of the worst experiences I have had personally in a hotel and I wish, in hindsight, that we had booked elsewhere. In fact, our first night had me googling other hotels in the area, and leaving immediately was a serious consideration. Collapse

We booked this hotel for very specific reasons personal to us. It fulfilled those needs and so no real complaints. To review more generally Good points: location - literally yards from St Mark's Square; staff friendly and helpful; bathroom good and spacious with bath as well as shower, bidet, hairdryer, etc bedroom décor a little old-fashioned but that is in keeping with Venice; breakfast (despite comments on here) was fine for me - cereal, coffee, fruit juice, choice of croissants, bread rolls, yoghurt, omelette, cheese, ham, salami, fresh fruit salad, etc. A special word for the breakfast staff - they work very hard and when items run out on the buffet they notice and replace them promptly - something that cannot be said in a lot of hotels. Bad points: only one for me really - location. Given the location the noise is a real problem at night, especially if you are in a room overlooking the alleyway (one of the main routes into / out of St Mark's Square. I managed just one night's sleep in 4 despite being exhausted! If you are staying in Venice for, say, one night then location is perfect. If a week or longer you would want to stay somewhere quieter in my view. Collapse
