Stayed in a the hotel 05/12/17 and 05/13/2017. The hotel is convenient to transportation and downtown shopping and eating. The front desk staff were pleasant. However, there were many negatives. We stayed in room 317. Specifics: 1) Parking for the hotel is in a tiny, unkept lot down an alley a few yards from the hotel. Apparently, the hotel allows contractors to use the lot which takes up most of the spots, and there is a port-a-pot (Johnny on the spot) situated in the lot which makes one of the spots difficult to navigate. The front desk gives you a key code to punch in to access the lot. Be advised, from happy hour on, you will have to walk by a rowdy bar with drunken fools screaming in the streets (I will refer back to this as I continue my review). This drunken, screaming, crying, cursing, scuffling crowd of drunken idiots smoke like chimneys. You have to walk through a wall of smoke. 2) Speaking of a wall of smoke. In addition to the drunks in the alley, the Aberdeen Douglas has a restaurant and bar on the ground floor. The patrons stand under the overhang of the Aberdeen Douglas, literally right up against the door to smoke. You can't get in/out without walking through clouds of smoke. This happened all day and night. It was terrible. 3) The room itself looked run-down and dirty. The carpet looked like it hadn't been vacuumed, let alone cleaned in months. All around the baseboard you could see thick layers of grey dust. The bed sank to one side so much that my husband felt like he was going to roll out of bed. The pillows were hard and smelled musty. The bathroom appeared to be well-appointed, however, the shower design is such (spa jets, rain shower) that the only way to prevent puddles of water on the floor is to pull the 1/3 size shower door into the shower with you creating a tiny space for you to move. The bathroom floor obviously floods. The grout on the floor near the door and window is white. The grout near the tub is stained brown and pink. Same with the grout on the shower wall nearest the shower. Stained pink and brown. The hotel does not provide toiletries. They have pump bottles of body wash and shampoo only in the shower. The toilet did not flush correctly. Housekeeping was aware of the issue and never called maintenance. 4) The environment in the room was intolerable. The room has no air conditioning and the hotel doe snot provide a portable fan. The window tilts out about 3 inches. This does not provide much airflow so the idea that you can open the window to cool the room is ridiculous. But, what is even more ridiculous, are the drunks mentioned in item #1 above. You can't open the window if you want to sleep. Their horrible drunken behavior goes on until the wee hours of the morning, and the smoke drifts up into the room. You should be aware that even with the windows closed, the noise is so bad this it keeps you awake. We did not get even one night of decent sleep in that hotel. 5) Breakfast each morning was so/so. They rarely had enough food to accommodate all of their guests, and ran out of options. We are vegetarians, and the only options available to us were bread. Vegetarians don't eat dairy yogurt nor eat cold cereal with dairy milk. Be aware that if you have dietary needs like gluten free, they will not have options for you. My husband tried to drink coffee and considered it one of the worse he has every tasted. The orange "juice" is clearly frozen from a can. I asked for water and received a nasty response. About 10 minutes later, a small pitcher of water was placed on the buffet. 6) The hotel has free wifi. The speed and connectivity are horrible for such a large city. We repeatedly lost connection, and, many e-mails were not sent because the server timed out. We do not recommend this hotel unless you like dirty, loud and raucous environments. If that's the case, then this hotel will make you very happy. Collapse

Firstly the positives: 2 mins walk from train/bus stations; lovely welcome from girl on reception; evening meal main course (Caesar salad) was substantial in size & served quickly & and by very efficient waiter. My only gripe with evening meal was dessert (apple & cinnamon crumble), tiny portion for just under £7 & no mention of raisins (which l can't stand) on the menu so l had to pick them all out Breakfast was also lovely, but perhaps each of the hot items should be labelled to prevent you having to lift the lid first to see what was inside? I got a good sleep as bed was comfy, but agree with others that you can hear everything in surrounding rooms so I'm glad it was a midweek business trip, not a weekend l was staying. Now, the negatives..........room was a double, very small bed for a double room; view from room was awful, just a view of the roof, but l understand that in an old building a view from every room isn't possible but just be ready to be disappointed! The rooms are tired & could really do with someone other than cleaning staff taking a good objective look at them. I'm still trying to comprehend why the window air vents were blocked up crudely with toilet roll rather than perhaps taped up if draught prevention is a problem?! The bathroom was pretty awful sadly. No lock on the door, just a large hole; no method of extraction so damp/mould has started to creep in due to steam from shower; a gaping hole in the sink plug hole, obviously the insert has long gone! No shower door, just old fashioned curtain on a rusty pole with some dubious yellow spots all over ceiling; the tray for sitting your shower gel etc is disgusting, covered in grey & orange soap scum and definitely not cleaned for some time! The shower head only worked in the centre few holes so water pressure was like bullet hitting you, also hot one minute then cold the next! All in all, not a good experience & as a hotel that's on our approved company hotels list for work l certainly won't be booking it again which is a shame as it's location for stations was great. My wife and I visited this hotel for 1 night and I have to say we enjoyed the atmosphere and service. The staff were very helpful and friendly and answered any questions we had. The room was clean and tidy and the bathroom large and well laid out. The shower was brilliant! We managed to get parked in the hotel car park but it is very small so get there early! The hotel does charge £5 for the car park but it is only a 2 minute walk from the hotel. The breakfast was buffet and there was plenty of choices from cereal to fruit or a full Scottish. We had dinner in Molly's and the food was incredible. Service in here was also very good. We would definitely go back here again. Collapse

Booked two standard rooms. Both of a fine standard but could benefit from a deep clean - understand this can be difficult when running at capacity. Beds comfy and good quality linen etc. Breakfast served through til 10am, great for the leisure traveller. Buffet style with plenty of choice, and also gluten free options on request. The carpark is small based on the size of the hotel, we got the last space - but is reasonably priced considering the city centre location. It wasn't made clear where any over spill could go, but in fairness we didn't need to ask. Would definitely return, as the hotel offered great value for money and all staff were lovely. Collapse

Really liked this hotel. It's older than I expected but had one of the comfiest and quietest hotel rooms I have had for a while. Great sleeps! Water pressure in the bathroom isn't great&coffee at breakfast is poor(very strong) but breakfast otherwise was great. Good selection of hot food, fruit&cereals. It's in a great location, very central. Parking was fine, we rang the hotel to get the code before we got there, hotel carpark small but good at 5 pounds. We were out all day exploring on Sat so when we got back it was full so had to use the NCP park with discount card which worked out 12pounds for the night. Would recommend this hotel for location, efficient staff, good breakfast&very comfy bed!! Collapse
