Grassmarket Hotel Reviews (Edinburgh)

Edinburgh is a fabulous city and we really enjoyed the bars, cafes and all the live music. Even in the depths of winter there is lots to do and see with a great variety of museums and some lovely independent art galleries. The City Arts Gallery is especially worth a visit , as is the roof terrace of the National Museum of Scotland with its 360 degree views. The Grassmarket Hotel is excellent- well located and clean comfortable rooms.

We arrived on sunday evening and were allocated our room. It took us three attempts to find it - going back each time to the receptionist. In all the corridors there were tools, equipment, plaster board, workmans sheets etc. Apparently the hotel was undetaking a major refurbishment which were werent told about. We are literally in the eves. No bath only shower. Tv which didn't work the whole time we were there despite our complaints. Fortunately the weather was good and we werent in the room long each day. Two nights was enough! I really feel that we should have been warned about this - had we known we would not have stayed there.

The hotel was basic, needed redecoration but ok. It was central, easy to get to from waverley station which was why we chose it. However saturday night was so noisy with drunken revellers that we had little sleep. Also a group of travellers were smoking and the building was thick with cigarette smoke & smells. We would stay a little further out of the centre next time and have a midweek break.

We were looking for somewhere reasonably priced to stay over in edinburgh as we'd booked playhouse tickets. The grassmarket hotel is in a fantastic area of edinburgh. The staff were great, the room was fairly basic, but clean and comfortable. I'd definitely stay there again.
