Unhappy with his lot he leaves London, only to be persuaded to return when he hears London's bells tolling "Turn again Whittington, Lord Mayor of London."
History of Dick Whittington
A classic pantomime story, Dick Whittington originates in English folklore and is loosely based around the life of Richard Whittington who really was Lord Mayor of London during the Middle Ages. The tale revolves around Dick's rags to riches story, his trusty cat and the "turn again Whittington" legend. The tale has been produced as a pantomime since the early 19th century and is still popular to this day.
