out of 5The hotel reception appeared understaffed, the room was tired in appearance and the furnishings were worn. The restaurant above was hosting a wedding and there was a rain of lit cigerette ends on the terrace outside our room. Plus, we had to pay for parking. The views were stunning, but as there were large patio doors rather than any windows, if you wanted fresh air you were very exposed i was surprised at the change in the area over the last 10 years, it seemed full of young drunken people, even at 6 in the evening there were people staggering about the streets.

The main problem being the lack of air conditioning and not being able to open the window more than an inch resulting in a rubbish night's sleep. Torquay itself was lovley with lots to do even though it was raining. I would recomend it to anyone.

We saw no evidence of this though. Rooms and restaurant had stunning sea views. Evening meal was no more than adequate in size but very tasty. Breakfast was busy but good quality food and fairly wide range available.

The shower either scalded you or gave you a cold shower as this was my second visit i did expect at least the rooms to have been redecorated. Very diappointed will not be returning again.

Didn't get time to use spa but i'm sure it is top notch and to consider it is available in the deal is terrific. Wouldn't stay anywhere else in the bay. If you get the chance visit the hole in the wall pub on a thursday or sunday or offshore bar thurs/fri/sat where they have good live music.

out of 5Location of hotel excellent - easy walk to the prom and in to town centre. Hotel itself run down and showing its age badly. Saturday night best avoided - stag parties in abundance and noise of nearby drunken revelry disturbed me at about 2 a.m. Coach party groups in hotel. Hotel's leisure pool was lovely and warm (if heavily chlorinated), but changing rooms unpleasant, no lockers, shower provided only tepid water. No additional towels provided for swimming.

out of 5Locals recommended the Imperial, the Grand or the Palace hotels. We liked the location of the imperial and the deal with Superbreak was the best we could find for this hotel. When we checked in our room wasn't ready so they gave us a free upgrade. Only one word describes it - wow! super king room and a super king bed. Fantastic views over Torbay - day and night. We were so lucky with the weather that we slept with balcony doors open, listening to the sea. Facilities are good (outdoor pool wasn't open as too early in the year). Breakfast is good: fruits, cereals, pastries, yoghurt, toast and full breakfast - although you have to order vegetarian sausages, or other forms of eggs; would have been nice to have mushrooms too. Tea and coffee is given cup by cup and is freshly stewed rather than brewed. Would be nice to be able to have a pot, or to make it yourself. Dinners on the hb basis are excellent. The food is to a very high quality. It was a shame that the meat free option isn't labelled vegetarian (not always the same thing!). I believe other dietary requirements can be met if you ask in advance. Given that the dinner was a bit short of £30, the Superbreak deal really is worth every penny. Torquay itself seems to have changed a lot. Many of the places in the town centre are the same in any town. Hoopers, Torquay's department store, is a cut above the rest. Even if you can only browse the items for sale, the coffee shop/ restaurant upstairs is worth a visit. Fayre includes freshly made scones with clotted cream! Torquay is a good base for trips. Although I didn't have time, you can do a day trip on a steam train, with a boat up the river Dart, a visit to greenaway (Agatha Christie's house just opened by the national trust), and a bus back to Torquay. Trips can also be taken by boat across tor bay to Brixham.

The room had exquisite views over the whole English riveria and sunsets were magical from our balcony. The hotel's staff were noticably friendly and helpful; nothing was too much trouble for them. I would highly recommend this hotel and it was a very good value for money, inclusive package, through Superbreak. Thank you.

out of 5Our aim on this one night break in Torquay was to find out as much about Agatha Christie's link with the town. We arrived at the Imperial hotel at mid day as our room was ready. We had a nice afternoon, starting with a fish and chip lunch then walking the Agatha Christie mile and ended with a visit to the museum. Our package included evening meal and the food was very good. The hotel was very clean but in need of an update. The next morning, after a good breakfast, we spent the morning at Torre abbey and a wonderfull afternoon at Greenway the house of the late Agatha Christie. A busy but enjoyable one night break.

out of 5I stayed wih my family, husband, son and daughter (15 & 18) in the Imperial hotel. We had stayed in the hotel before, several years ago, and were disappointed to see the state of disrepair of the furnishings in our rooms and dining room. The gym and pool area were also very tatty with paint peeling from the walls, a broken handrail on the jaccuzi and the changing rooms and showers were filthy. The pool table was unavailable on the second night of our stay. The meals, however, were delicious and portions were generous. The staff in the hotel were generally friendly and helpful. During our stay we spent time in Torquay, walked along the coast line, visited Kent's Cavern and ate in some local restaurants.

If sherry had been served we would have felt like house guests. When we arrived at the Imperial hotel we were taken aback by the sheer size and opulence of our magnificent suite with two balconies. The views over Torbay were breath-taking and we had to be dragged away screaming the next day.The staff were all delightful and dinner at the hotel was accompanied by the same views and gourmet food. Overall, we had a good time but were disappointed by the bedroom facilities - the bed was lumpy and uncomfortable and there were no shelves or hooks in the bathroom. Being Half term, there were quite a number of children staying at the hotel, yet there were no facilities to suit them, other than the pool. On the Wednesday evening, there was a disco for over 18s in the Ballroom, Bingo going on in the Lounge - where do the children go? onsequently, I would recommend the hotel to friends, but not to those with children.

out of 5We decided on a weekend break for four mid life crisis sufferers in Torquay. Staying at the Grand Hotel, Torquay. The Hotel is a fine old establishment, staffed by some good people. Unfortunately, our room, room 2, was directly underneath a room occupied by Hammy the Hamster. Up and down all night long!! And the floors creaked! However, we enjoyed ourselves none the less. We decided not to eat in the hotel restaurant since it seemed to have a very limited menu for such a fine establishment. We ate out both evenings. The Inn on the Green at Paignton... Don't miss it.. A great place and unbelievably friendly and well run. Nothing was too much trouble and dinner was served at jig time.. great since there must have been 250 people at various firms Xmas dinners there that night. Excellent quality and service. See it then die... Not really of course!

I also enjoyed the ammenities on offer such as the out-door pool, restaurant and cafe/bar. The staff were also extremely pleasant and helpful.I felt as if I was abroad, the English Riviera is definately a place for both locals and people who want a more 'abroad' feeling holiday. It was pleasant, calming and interesting. I would most definitely consider coming back!

Cockington Manor 7 Park lovely location but more to do than I think would be normal as they had their annual fair when we visited. Go early and come away early on that day, which this year was 1st Aug.All in all a lovely break and the best bit was the hotel.

out of 5I spent five days in Torquay from 30th March to 3rd April 2007. I stayed at the 4* Grand Hotel as I wanted to treat myself to a little luxury. Not so! My single room was small. The bathroom - couldn't swing a cat round in it! Both rooms were cold. Although there was a radiator in the room, even on maximum heat, the room was not warm due to the galeforce draughts coming through the window. There was no radiator in the bathroom - so that was absolutely freezing. The furniture in the room was both shabby and dusty. I'm asthmatic - so that didn't help! The window in the bathroom was plain glass looking straight out onto the stree! One of the curtains was hanging from the rail in the bathroom - this was fixed about two hours after my arrival. I had to wait almost half an hour before my luggage was brought up to my room - it had been in store due to the fact I had arrived too early to check in. I did have a complimentary coffee and biscuits in the bar on my arrival. The majority of the staff were pleasant enough but not particularly attentive. Each morning at breakfast I had to ask for coffee and toast - other guests were asked as soon as they were seated. In the bar the procedure was to be seated and a member of staff would come to you. Each time I went in the bar I had to wait ages, even when that bar was not particularly busy. One particular day I got so fed up of waiting for my order to be taken I walked out. Yet again, other guests were attended to immediately they were seated. The leisure club was a great disappointment. Unsupervised. Both times I used the pool there were incidents of 'stupid' behaviour from other guests which had the potential to be dangerous. No specific times when children not allowed to use the facilities. Changing rooms cramped and not particularly clean. No access to pool for anyone like myself with slight mobility problems. Steps into pool were not secure. Rail on side of steps to jaccuzzi was extremely loose. On the positive side . . . Torquay and the surrounding areas has a lot to offer and there's plenty to do. I would certainly go back to Torquay but not to the Grand.

I would not go to that hotel again.

The hotel is struggling to keep its 5th star and this became obvious throughout the stay.Even out of season, Torquay is still "open" and the local Wetherspoon's offered real ale at £1.59 per pint. Excellent value!Restaurants to visit are Bianco's Italian, a must, The Thai restauarant by the harbour is expensive but good.

out of 5The Paramount Imperial Hotel is a good hotel with good rooms and fantastic sea views from balconies, although a little tired around the edges. As it is on the top a steep hill I would not recommend it for persons with walking difficulties.Breakfast was dissapointing it was standard and very basic for vegetarians. Some items on the menu were charged additionally for e.g. Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese Bagel and Smoked Haddock etc. I have stayed in the Derwent Hotel and the breakfast there was far superior to the Imperial. Food was in abundance and anything you wanted was at no extra cost.Nice setting and surroundings, being around the harbour area you are just out of the town.Town is good for shopping, although a steep climb again not suitable for persons with walking difficulties. Plenty of bars and restaurants, didnt do any sightseeing as it was only for a weekend and weather was very wet.We all liked Torquay and enjoyed our weekend away and would definately go again.

Riverford organic farm, who provide a 'box scheme' across the south of England do an interesting tour with lunch afterwards. The food was fantastic and very reasonably priced. Dartmoor was much hillier than I had expected, so those leg muscles might need a workout before attempting any major walks! Bovey Tracy was beautiful and there was a lovely walk in National Trust parkland along a river. It was very busy with dog walkers when we went though!
