About Marat / Sade

In 2011 the Royal Shakespeare Company is celebrating its 50th year with a series of nine plays. Marat/Sade follows the story of post revolutionary France where the inmates of an asylum present a play about the murder of Jean-Paul Marat under the direction of the notorious Marquis de Sade. As the director of the asylum and his family sit down expecting to see a patriotic display, they are confronted with a performance that is unruly, shocking and outspoken.

Originally performed in 1964 the Adrian Mitchell adaptation of the incredible Marat/Sade still remains one of the company’s most acclaimed productions to date. As part of the 50th birthday celebrations RSC Literary Associate Anthony Neilson will direct a newly-conceived version of the Peter Weiss play.

Marat / Sade Theatre Breaks always includes tickets with hotel accommodation, and the number of tickets you request must be the same as the number of hotel guests.
