Fantastic Week In Rome
A customerfrom United Kingdomwho stayed at 3* Domus Pacis Torre Rossa Park (Special Rate) in Rome wrote this review.

Overall Hotel Rating:
out of 5The hotel was ideally placed as a base for exploring the city and going further afield. If you want a hotel to return to during the day/get changed before going out for dinner, perhaps not for you, but if, like us, what you want is a good night's sleep, a fantastic breakfast, good transport links to the city centre, and lovely surroundings to relax with a drink after a hard day's sight-seeing, this hotel would be perfect. We made the most of our seven night stay by seeing the big, busy attractions - the colosseum, the vatican, the fora - early on in the week (week days are always quieter than the weekends) and then as seeking out slightly quieter sites such as ostia antica, banditaccia etruscan cemetery at cerveteri, a walk along the via appia antica... Top tip would be to eat as the romans do - avoid the packed and expensive tourist restaurants between piazza navona and the trevi fountain and head for smaller, family-run places like babette (off via del corso, so hardly off the beaten track!), or grab a cheap and delicious lunch at the sublime la renella bakery in trastevere.

out of 5After an exhausting train journey from manchester to rome (via london and paris) we arrived at the hotel colosseum. A welcome oasis in the hustle and bustle of roma city. Rooms are air conditioned, spotlessly clean, tidied every day, friendly staff and so conveniently situated for all the major attractions in rome. Excellent pizzerias and restaurants just round the corner on via cavour - somewhere different to eat every evening. Standard of food was excellent everywhere we tried. Overall an excellent hotel in a fabulous city.

out of 5A friend and I stayed at the domus in late may'11 for a four night sightseeing break. We both found the hotel to be a perfect base for our trip, situated just outside the centre but within a couple of minutes walk to the metro (we found the metro to be so convenient and easy to use, would definitely recommend it, a few minutes to the city centre and even less to the vatican). The hotel staff were efficient and friendly. Food was good, especially the pizza! breakfast was perfect for me, fresh fruit, yoghurt's, toast etc, plus a huge selection of cakes/pastries and hot breakfast. The hotel has some grounds to walk or sit out and is overall a lovely, clean and convenient hotel. I would stay again when i return to rome.

out of 5Value for money, the hotel was great. The rooms are in a seperate block 50 yeards away, set in very quiet sheltered gardens, they are basic with a bed and ensuite, but very clean, lovely fresh towels and sheets. The breakfast was buffet style and had everything you would expect, hot and cold food. There was a bar and snack bar for pizzas, panini's etc.And a little shop. The bus stop was just outside the hotel, 10 minutes on the bus took you to st. Peters. The metro was quite a long, long walk away, but not impossible. Again, value for money it was excellent. All staff friendly.

out of 5When in Rome we found it easy to get about after the first day, we tried walking first day and got lost, if your lost get a taxi, dont try to find your way because the streets are misleading, once you find one attraction the rest are in walking distance except vatican, thats a tube away. Our hotel was a nice hotel, one down fall, the room was freezing and we did not know how to get the air condition on, breakfast was amazing, great choices, bacon and scrambled egg included. Hotel was a bit far from places with hardly a footpath to walk on, the bus stop was just outside, all in all I wouldnt know what to do in Rome after 2 days, we seemed to get everything in inthe 2 days.

out of 5We were a party of 3 couples and 2 couples had a very poor room with no window except in the ceiling so had no view whatsoever. The other couple had lovely accomodation with separate living and bedroom areas and a view out of their window. As we had booked this hotel together 2 of the couples complained straight away to reception. They said they had run out of basic rooms so gave the other couple a junior suite. We told them we were not happy with the basic rooms and they said they would try and move us the following day. They did move us to a room with a view but it was only one room for living and sleeping, not a junior suite as the other couple. We did not realise when booking the basic rooms were that basic. The beds were rather hard so i did not sleep well as a result. The hotel on the whole was large but had very friendly staff and the breakfast was excellent.

out of 5The Torre Rossa hotel is located in the west of the city, quite far out from the centre. We used the metro everyday which is about a 15 minute walk from the hotel to the nearest station at Cornelia. There is a good bus link too with stops closer to the hotel, but if you don't mind the walk, the metro is probably the fastest way to travel. We visited all the usual sights and thoroughly recommend booking a tour of the Vatican as there is so much to see and learn.

out of 5First try and book everything in advance eg Shuttle minibus from airport to hotel - pre book visit to Vatican museums (including Sistine chapel) it will save you hours of frustration & waiting. Book guided tour of Colliseum - again save you hours of queuing.Fully recommend the hotel Torre Rossa on the outskirts of the Vatican. A short bus journey to the centre - again buy a 1,3 day or weekly travel pass - used on buses & metro - the hotel is great as is the restaurant. Well worth the money.

out of 5We were very fortunate to find such a good value hotel at short notice. The bus service into Rome is excellent, right outside the door. Tickets are sold at the bar. When in Rome use the 116 bus service, its a little electric bus that goes down all the pedestrian areas and even the parks, plus it passes close to nearly every best attraction. Bus ticket valid on any bus, plus metro + some trains for 24 hours is only 4 euros. Best place day and evening is the area around Piazza Navona, use the restaurants in the side streets, the ones in the square are expensive. The spanish steps are over rated, I wouldn't bother. Book your Colisseum and forum tickets online in advance in the uk, you go straight to the front of the queue to the reserved tickets booth (no queue at all). Overall take your time, walk the back streets and stop at plenty of cafes (and hop on the 116 bus when you fancy a rest). Beautiful city, enjoy.

out of 5The aim of the holiday was to walk around Rome and be a traditional tourist. As keen walkers public transport was not an option unless it was late at night or a great distance. However when we did use the local transport we were amazed at how cheap it was to get around on the metro...Only 1 euro for 75 mins of travel. For those who find walking difficult or a chore then the metro really is the way to travel. Only 2 lines in Rome you can't go wrong. For those who visit Rome for the sites, don't forget there is a beach on the outskirts of Rome for a short rest. This journey is well within the 1 euro distance of travel.

out of 5The hotel location was excellent, only 300m from metro station cornelia. If you get a bus from Ciampino airport to Anagnina metro station (1.2 euros) you can then travel to Cornelia (1 euro). Taxis are very expensive, avoid them. Usual sights are worth seeing but make sure you visit via Condotti for expensive shops and street markets for good cheap fakes (louis vittuon bags for 30 euro). The place to eat near the Carpenga hotel is Ferro e Ghisa Pizzeria only 200m away...Good food and very cheap house wine. Enjoy.

out of 5I had to spend a few days in Rome for meetings, and this hotel was a really pleasurable place to lay my head at night. The style is classic elegance so high ceilings, chandeliers in the bedrooms, traditional furniture, porter service on arrival that kind of thing. The staff were excellent, no question was too much trouble, they helped me find out information on buses, restaurants etc. The breakfast was plentiful, but European, so plenty of pastries, ham, cheese, bread fruit. They did have hot bacon and eggs etc, but not what you'd call a traditional English. The garden restaurant/bar is a lovely setting, just nice for an evening aperitif in the summer. My room was a standard and it was quite large. You entered into a corridor with a bathroom off one side and the bedroom off the other, so not just your standard box. The location is good too, I walked it from the Train station in 10 minutes (although in the summer heat with a big suitcase in hindsight I would have caught a taxi). You can take a leisurely 15 min walk straight down the Via Nazionale and be right in the middle of the Colosseum, forum etc. There is a Metro stop just 100m from the hotel so you can go wherever you like easily. All in all I thought it was a really nice traditional Italian hotel with good service.

We stayed near termini station it was handy but a little far away from the via corsa area sights and shops. Read up beforehand and list the sights you most want to see all of the popular places do tend to be very busy. Must follow dress code when visiting basilica's & churches. Look for the less well known sights there are many to be found.

out of 5We spent 5 days on honeymoon in Rome staying at the SAS Radisson. Wonderful hotel with rooftop pool, fairly central location - food pricey in hotel but that is a minor comment as Rome has an abundance of wonderful cafes and restaurants. Would not recommend Rome for family holiday - too much walking and sightseeing to suit children - but for an adult city break it is terrific. Stayed for 5 days and could easily have spent a fortnight and still feel there was loads to do and see. Highlight was trip to Pompeii - a little tricky if going by public transport rather than on organised tour but well worth it.

out of 5On day one we arrived at lunchtime, very tired. After an hours sleep, we went off walking and saw the Colleseum and other buildings in that area of town. Day 2 was the bus tour, and a good look around the Vatican, and the final day was more time at the vatican and catching up on any missed items. Lots to seen and highly recommended as a destination.Hotel was very good - ample size for two of us, plenty warm enough, towels and soap supplied (which surprised us), very clean, and very helpful staff. We did find a few large italian beetles in the room from time to time, but can't blame the hotel staff for that really. Excellent breakfast, including continental as well as english food. All went to make a first class break.

out of 5Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the many sights of Rome. We booked Superbreak Airport Rail to Manchester Airport, flew into Fiumicino Airport and caught the 30 minute Leonardo Express to the Terminii Station (It stops at platform 24 where you can leave your bags if you want to catch some sights before checking into the hotel). The Grand Hotel Palazzo Carpegna is excellent value and easily accessible via the Metro which is cheap and clean. The hotel is 15 minutes from the Vatican and 30 minutes from the Terminii (If you decide to stay out late and miss the last train you can get the MA1 night bus from the Terminii). Rome is packed with magnificent architecture, museums and monuments. Allow at least a day each for: Saint Peter's Basilica and The Vatican Museums; The Colosseum and The Forum; the historic city walk. Add extra days for museum visits and shopping! As we were short of time we added a hop on hop off tour option so we could see the sights we missed on the foot. We also recommend travelling in February when the queues are shorter and the weather mild (but remember to pack a brolly). Enjoy!

If visiting the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel and Basilica essential to do a tour otherwise you would miss a lot. Coliseum worth having a look at, although don't do a "tour" as it is a con. they talk to you for 25 minutes outside, and thenabandon you inside. Waste of money.

The transport system is good and very cheap (£1 per journey), so we didn't suffer from the hotel location. And savings were huge comparing with the hotels in city centre! Stuff is English-speaking, very friendly and helpful. The breakfast (cereals, bread, butter, cheese, cake + drinks) was only dissapointing thing. But advantage was a family-run pizzeria next to the hotel which was open till late and made a good cheap pizza :)

The hotel was rooms were compact, avoid a 4th floor accomodation, as the rooms are built in the eves, they are dark and enclosed. The hotel is close to the metro and 4 stops from the vatican city. For a great atmosphere vist the Spanish Steps and Piazza Novona in the evening. Plenty of good bars and restaurants.Beware there are few public toilets and in general the toilets in bars are baic and in some cases not very clean.

out of 5We had 5 days in Rome and visited all the major attractions. It was easy to get round and the people were friendly. The saying is true see Rome and die I don't think there is another city in Europe that has the same influence on you. Shopping is excellent and plenty of good coffee shops but don't order a capuccino after midday.

out of 5The twin room we were first given at the Grand Palazzo Carpegna, in Rome was unacceptable to us. Whilst the room was clean and well appointed, it was with considerable concern that we realised that the room on the forth floor did not have a window only a sky light, the hotel changed the room the next day (they were fully booked the first night) it got our holiday in Rome off to a disappointing start due to a poor nights sleep.

out of 5Hotel was excellently located for public transport and attractions but inconvenient for evening dining, no decent restaurants within walking distance. Hotel recommended Osteria Dell 'Animi off Piazza Navona, around 65 Euros for two, with wine, good quality.Recommend Hop on/off bus if first time in Rome, to establish bearings. We used CitysightseeingRoma which had the advantage of the ticket being valid for two days. But use the underground Metro to get directly to places of interest, quickly.

Buy a ticket for 11 euros which lasts for 3 days and allows you to use all forms of public transportmany, many attractions to see, plan your days so they are not wasted. The queue for the Sistine Chapel seemed quieter after 11.30am, and your shoulders and knees need to be covered up if you're going in St Peters Basilica.

out of 5The Hotel Grand Palazzo Carpegna is described inside as a conference centre and thats what it is, with touring groups at the weekend. A great location, but could do better.I would rather have gin & tonic at less than 8euro in "Happy Hour" and forego the "finger food" and I'd like the same enthusiasm for cleaning the bedroom floor as for changing the towels.Pity the directions to it were wrong.Rome is a mass of great places to visit, but take your camping gear if you want to get into the Vatican other than in an organised group.

The Termini was very good for information on getting around and you can get a BIG ticket for 4 euros which lasts all day.Our hotel was very good although it took 15 minutes by bus into Rome and the nearest metro station - Bologna was quite a long walk approx 20-30 mins.

out of 5Crowne Plaza Hotel in Rome was a good choice for us. We were a party of six with differing mobility so it was important to have a hotel with facilities were we could relax for part of the day but also close enough to see the sights in Rome. We used the hotel shuttle bus to St Peters a few times but mostly used taxis which in general are very good. The hotel staff were very friendly,we particularly enjoyed the pool bar where we had a cocktail late afternoon and the Piano bar where we enjoyed the music and were able to relax after a long day.The staff in both were very friendly.
Overall Hotel Rating:
out of 5A very busy city where you take your life in your hands just trying to cross a road, green man and zebra crossing mean nothing. Hotel room was very, very small and disapointingly noisey and was further away from attractions as I was led to believe. Attractions were very good and interesting.

The staff didn't bother to actually speak unless absolutely necessary & then it was with an air of utter contempt. And I think the lift was actually bigger than our room. The breakfast consisted of a couple of dry croissants & tea, it wasn't worth the bother getting up! I would definately not stay here again or recommend it.

out of 5This was out 1st visit to Rome and whilst it was an excellent short break it was exhausting! Somuch to see and do. When we arrived at the airport we caught the Terravision coach - purchased tickets at Stansted before the flight - no hassle transfer of approx 30 mins. We then purchased a metrobus ticket and caught the metro to Cornelia which was, as your brochure said, 1km from the hotel. We were pleased with the hotel - we never spend much time in the room it is purely used as a base! The cafes, bars and restaurants are very relaxed and the food is excellent! All the attractions were very good - not too much queuing! It is extremely easy to get about with out a car using the metro and bus. All in all it was a great experience. We would definately use your company to book in the future.

out of 5Our hotel - Grand Palazzo - was fantastic but I would recommend staying somewhere within the city walls if at all possible as it was difficult to get back to the hotel a few miles away.We went if February and this is an excellent idea - the weather was mild and as we did a lot of walking we didnt have to struggle with the heat. There is so much to see that your holiday will be wasted if its mostly spent in bars cooling off.The food can be a bit hit and miss. If its cheap its most likely not great food, if its great food its most likely quite expensive!!

out of 5when staying in a hotel i would best recommend one in the barberini area, the more higher class hotels are here and the area around is the best area i could see to stay in. we stayed in the suburbs and the surrounding area was scary to go through at night and the buses were poor, a man was run over when we were travelling home one night.as for the best ice cream i really enjoyed a good 'gelato' when i was looking at the trevi fountain. it was such a beautiful moment im sure ill remember it forever.the best sight i would say was the colloseum, and for this me and my boyfriend followed the advice many others have given us and that is to get a tour. for ¿21 you get a tour inside and out, jump the queue and also get a tour of the roman forum .... and you have to pay ¿11 just to queue up get in without any historical explanation. definitely worth it.

out of 5Hotel was well situated and in the area as described on Internet. Clean rooms, although the bed was made each day, glasses not washed or replaced. No way to use kettle, except crawling under the table!! Travelled over Christmas break and the Vatican was amazing.Saw the Pope give his blessing, atmosphere unforgettable.Sadly, food was very bad everywhere, all pre-cooked and then heated in a microwave. Very disappointing for Italy. On last day, taxi speed off so fast, I left my video camera and scarf in the back..After speaking with 6 taxi companies (via a helpful receptionist at hotel) I did not recover the video. Spent an hour back at St. Peters speaking with taxi drivers but no luck. Marco (receptionist on last day, was very unsympathetic and said he was too busy to help me...not good customer service relationship Marco!!) Other staff though were very helpful, in particular the Hotel taxi driver. Most concerned of my loss and helped us look at taxis at the airport.Sad feelings of trip in Rome, but sights were amazing and will return again in the future.

Don't eat at restaurants on Piazza Navona itself but venture off a few yards down one of the side streets. Food just as good but much better value for money and more attentive service.
