A Night At The Waterside

Stay Date: 17/03/12
Overall Hotel Rating:
out of 5Hotel was in a prime position for visiting bath, just a short walk over the river bridge and we were in the city centre. However we were relying upon the restuarant at the hotel as we knew we would be arriving at about 7.30 and didn't have to try and find somewhere to eat. It was a waste of time as they had run out of so many things, there were no salads available although we were not told this at time of ordering so had already had our starter when the waitress told us, consequently, my husband had the driest burger ever without even a drop of relish to make up for the lack of garnish. We were very dissapointed! also the hotel is a little tired and the mould on the bathroom tiles gives the impression of uncleanliness, not nice. Other than that we had an excellent time in bath and would thoroughly reccomend it as a place to visit.

out of 5Caught the great western train from paddington, smooth journey, should have taken a pack lunch as buffet prices were a bit steep, dont forget your ear phones for the tv's, but you can get them I think. Nice and clean and comfy. Got to bath found our hotel in Queens Square, right near everything, lovely hotel, bit creaky, but i like that, staff excellent, breakfast excellent, room right up in the heavens but i did ask for a quiet room but ours was quite small, looking over the rooftops. Walking distance of the crescent, park, jane austin centre, shops everything, a few police cars/ambulance went past the hotel so really was glad was at the back. We went on our break on the thursday 24th nov when the christmas market began, strolled round for a couple of days, thought I would pop back on the saturday before we came home and couldn't get near the place, market/shops etc absolutely crammed so glad we went in the week. I really liked the hotel, loved Bath, loads of resturants, if you look down little alleys old pubs tucked away, we wish we had gone to a resturant called 'sally lunn' the oldest house and the food looked lovely.

Overall Hotel Rating:
out of 5Not a bad hotel but looks a little tatty and tired in places. Our room was fine but faced the main road so traffice noise could be heard for most of the night although not that bad. Our friends had to change rooms though as they were on the ground floor and the bedroom window didn't shut properly! staff very helpful and friendly. Ate in the bar and food although not a wide choice was good. Good location as only a short walk to both the centre of town and train station and parking reasonable £5 for 24 hours. Overall good value for money for a central hoel in Bath. Could be really good if travelodge invested in a bit of decoration.

out of 5My 13 yr old daughter & I enjoyed a weekend break in Bath. Hotel was good even was able to check in early, arrived to leave bag as there before official check in time but as room was ready we were allowed our room early. Reception staff pleasant and efficient. Room was clean, spacious, beds in our twin room a little narrow though, bathroom a little dated but clean. Breakfast very good, could have anything from the buffet cold breakfast or anything from the hot breakfast menu which was all in with our b&b rate, only criticism was the breakfast staff not great at taking your order you most mornings had to stop them & give them your order. Bath itself is great. Plenty to do and even though busy with tourists didn't seem crowded. My teenager daughter enjoyed the shopping and I enjoyed the sightseeing and heritage.

However, i would not recomment the barcelo hotel as it is pporly run and service is terrible. The hotel looks amazing and the grounds are lovely, but sadly that is all going for it. The details haven't been thought through and it is being left to rot which is a real shame.

Hotel room and bathroom - ok, possibly could do with a little updating but perfectly acceptable. Beds very comfortable, staff were excellent - very polite. Definately recommend the thermae bath spa - it was amazing and so relaxing. And the greek restaurant opa, very close by - food was beautiful and atmosphere was fab.

out of 5The main building of the hotel and its surroundings were impressive. Disappointingly, however, we were allocated a room in separate accommodation in the grounds of the hotel, not in the main building. The outside of this 'annexe' was scruffy. The muslin curtains inside the room smelt very musty and it was clear the windows had not been cleaned for some time.Paint was peeling in the bathroom and the light fittings needed a good clean. The meals in the hotel were good and we enjoyed the surroundings of the main building.

out of 5I was dissapointed with the hotel, food was excellent but the service was very poor. Room was not ready, then they forgot about us. Breakfast was like faulty towers, more attention to detail would greatly improve the hotel. The bar prices were shocking, the barman ruined my gin &tonic, so had to have another gin, was charged £10.20 for double gin&tonic. No atmosphere. I would not stay at this hotel again. We enjoyed bath itself, would go again. Visited lacock on sunday, excellent, well worth a visit.

out of 5Was a lovely experience. The hotel was very welcoming and as it was our anniversary we were given a room upgrade, at no extra cost. The room had a private balcony overlooking the countryside below. Our meal in the hotel was lovely and the chef wrote happy anniversary, in chocolate, on our dessert plates. The roman baths are a must see, though the thermae spa was an experience, but very very pricey. We paid £88 to get in for 4hrs, which included the hire of slippers, robes and towels. The basic entry price is £25 each for 2 hours or £35 each for 4 hours. Apart from that we had a lovely time, eating traditional cornish pasties and walking around the beautiful streets, leading to the royal crescent.

out of 5Not very impressed. We stayed two nights b/b and evening meal for a set price. When we got the menu for dinner the first evening we discovered that hotel only allow £25 per person and over that you pay extra. Sweet is not included, does not say that when you book it. Also we arrived friday for two nights at a four star hotel. Room was not serviced by a maid, no bed was made. Tea/coffe tray was not topped up, paid a lot of money for this weekend but would not go back.

out of 5Anyone who spends a weekend in Bath will never be bored. There is so much to see and do in a small central area so transport other than shanks pony is not required. Forget the tour buses round town. Go to the square in front of the abbey at 10.15 each morning and join a free walking tour lasting just over two hours. The guides are just as interesting as the sites you will see. Jane Austen features often even though she didnt like Bath very much describing it as a building site, which it was at that time 200 years ago. Dine in the pump room - their bathbuns are superb. The roman water at 50p a time will cure all your ills. For something different tour William Herschel's museum in King St and stand on the spot where he discovered the planet Uranus in 1781. Visit the costume museum, the assembly rooms and imagine yourself back in the 18th century. Its a great place - and now Bath has an olympic champion, the icing on the cake.

We could see the Abbey from our window, in fact it is just across the road. There is so much to do in Bath, lovely shops, restaurants, bars, theatres, the thermae spa and of course the historical sites such as the roman baths. I would recommend a stay in the Abbey Hotel, but ideally, pack up your things and move there!.

Great shopping the following day too.

out of 5After a weekend at Glastonbury festival a bit of relaxation was needed before heading home - Bath was the perfect place. I had booked a single room in the Abbey Hotel, perfect location & really nice room. The only downside the room has no air conditioning & as it must've been one of the hottest days of the year so far even with 2 fans the room remained really hot all night.Every evening outside the hotel at 8 o'clock there is a comedy walk around central Bath I would highly recommend this - on the night I went about 70 people were on the walk so it's really popular & it was hilarious, well worth £8 !!

Bath was as good as we had heard. Pleasant, friendly (even the hoodies said excuse me and thankyou) great facillity's and yes we got lucky with the weather. Pratts hotel gave us a warm welcome with big smiles which is a good start. The car park is across the road and next to the police station so its safe. The lift is not for the hypo's like me but so what the exercise did me good. The room whilst aged was clean and very comfortable. Breakfast was a real treat if you like a cooked breaky if you dont there was plenty of choice. Go see for yourself you wont be dissapointed and just to round the weekend off Leicester Tigers beat Bath! can't lie I felt a bit guilty.

Why don't they move the bus stop to somewhere else or at the very least put up a very large bus shelter? Maybe they're sponsored by the taxi firms. Nice hotel receptionist helped me get clean - a major operation - and found me a taxi quickly.

Spent the first day shopping after a good lunch and local pint in Porters. On Sunday spent the morning at the Roman Baths. Really good audio tour which allowed you so round at your own pace and get details on the things that interested you. In the afternoon did our own walking tour of the architectural sites such as the Circus and Royal Crescent. Spent a most magical evening at the new baths. Expensive but well worth it especially the softly lit rooftop pool in the dark with the city lights all around and the floodlit abbey as the backdrop.

out of 5We found Bath a really pleasant city to wander around with this mix of history, great buildings and a variety of small unusual and different shops as well as the usual "big ones" . There are lots of eating places to suit all tastes and pockets.Parking is like all old towns difficult so be prepared to park alittle out of the main area and walk in - but we found that quite pleasant. We stayed at Pratts Hotel and sadly that was not a pleasant experience. Great position - central - parking is difficult and expensive - populated by alot of younger people visiting the city but no probelm there however, there isa night club 40 yards away and I would think Weekend ( we stayed saturday only)noise in the early hours will keep some of us awake. We found it very noisy. The rooms are old and tired and with no air conditioning and too much noise at night we were unable to open the sash windows so found the rom stiflingly hot. Breakfast was also not a good experience either. Shame because we enjoyed Bath

out of 5Travelling by car, directions were nearly spot-on. A mini-roundabout has now changed to a junction with lights. Bath was a great place to visit. One night stay with two rooms (took my elderly mum).Abbey Hotel didn't advise us that they were not offering meals in the evening due to a private function (we'd arrived @21:15 - we'd pre-warned that we were going to be late checking-in). Ended up getting pie + yummy chips from the Fish & Chip shop near the shops. Milk was off and past expiry date in our room (staff dealt with it very well). Noisy pub nearby (but was warned on website). Biggest gripe wasn't really the hotel's fault - noisy departing guests at 06:30. Would use hotel again if wanting a central location. Breakfast was yummy. Just remembered: they wanted to clean the room at 09:00 even though we were leaving that day after breakfast (served until 10:30 on Sat.). Latest check-out was 11:00. Note about Manvers St car park -you can pay using credit/debit card. We paid on Fri evening for Sat's 08:00-20:00 period - save dashing to car park to feed meter first thing in the morning.

out of 5Bath was fantastic, we could have spent a week tnere and still be worn out. There was so much to do and see. The Hotel let our stay down. It was strange as if we arrived out of season, yet it was the 4th June. We had lunch on arrival at the Hotel restaurant (Alfresco) and there were only 2 other tables occupied yet for some reason it took ages and ages for the food to arrive, and mine was only a seared tuna on salad. Which was tasteless. It wasnt worth waiting for. We ate at the hotel for our evening meal, but only the Alfresco restaurant was open for dinner, which was disappointing and they could only offer the same menu as the one we had for lunch. A very poor show for a 5* hotel. Very slow service. Again there were not many people eating but we had to wait ages again for our food. This time I had a Chicken pasta dish. Slightly more flavour and only about 4 morsels of chicken. Also a lack of quantity, it was more like a large starter size. It took ages to get some bread and to catch the waiters/tress attention for a drink. But, the SPA in the hotel was brilliant. The reception staff were very slow, didnt seem on the ball at all but were very polite. The hotel gardens/grounds get the best vote from us, they were beautiful.

My husband and I stayed at the Mercure Francis, a charming Georgian hotel with the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in and very reasonable rates (for Bath!) The Thermae Spa was very impressive and well worth a visit, but be warned, carry your shampoo around with you as the showers are two floors away from the lockers and there were queues for them! The joint birthday meal was at La Flamenca which is a truly authentic Spanish restaurant with superb tapas, a guitar player and a wonderful ambience. It was a very enjoyable birthday weekend.Bath is a great place to visit with lots going on and a really cosmopolitan feel. As icing on the cake we also managed to find a handy sports pub, The Litten Tree, in which to watch our local football team Pompey win the FA cup!

There is good range odf small shops outside the big chains, with quality clothes and gifts. Excellent restaurants too. Bath bun at pump room recommended though Sally Lunn buns were a bit of a disappointmentAbbey Hotel is good value for money and has nice central location close to station and all attractions. Ask for a back room though as may get a bit noisy in the early hours from student exuberance on weekend nights. The free guided walk organised by Tourist Information is a must, very friendly well informed guides, and the visit to the historical Theatre Royal was not to be missed. Tilleys Bistro was very good value for early pre theatre meals and Sally Lunns Teashop was delicious in very ancient surroundings. out of 5The Abbey Hotel where we stayed was in a fantastic location, right in the city centre but in a quiet place. You do have to pay for parking in a public car park (12GBP for 24 hours) but it's right next to a police station! The breakfast was amazing every day (we stayed 3 nights). It sounds trivial, but the poached eggs were always perfect! The downside was we didn't get good sleep some nights because our bed was really hard (and I do personally like hard mattresses). Also the freeview channels weren't working, but then you shouldn't be going to Bath to watch TV. Bath is a great city. Aside from the gorgeous architecture there are plenty of things to see and do, even in winter. The Roman Baths were a bit pricey but you've got to visit it once in your life. The Pump Room was lovely. Although the cream tea was a bit pricey you'd pay a lot more for tea at the Ritz! Also there was a nice mix of couples, families and lone travellers with books. Thermae spa have a roof-top pool, if you're brave enough. Would recommend bringing your own towels/flip-flops as they usually charge for these. Overally Bath is a truly beautiful city where you will struggle to find an eyesore. It's so romantic, even in January's poor weather. I'll definitely go back again.

The spa and pool were clean and welcoming, definitely recommend a massage by the trained professionals to relax you. Great location for Longleat which is impressive, our 5 year old daughter loved it. The staff at the Bishopstrow were friendly and professional and room service was prompt, the service and food in the restaurant was excellent. Our suite was outstanding with great views of the grounds, overall, the standard was extremely high and we intend to re-visit the Bishopstrow in the near future, they make elegance seem effortless.

Other than that no complaints. Lots to see and do in Bath but where put off walking along the Avon because of the down and outs drinking along there. Bus tour very good, especially if you get a guide.

Staff friendly, rooms clean, food good. Shopping is excellent in Bath, as is the bus tours for £10 you can have 2 tours (around the city and in the countryside). Both tours were really interesting, as was the Ghost Walk! Can't wait to go back.

out of 5We came to see Bath and its sights and thoroughly enjoyed our time. The city was easy to walk around although a bit hilly if that is important to you and some areas were not well lit after dark. The Roman baths were far greater an experience than we could have imagined and the hand held commentaries an excellent facility. We also very much enjoyed the Thermae Spa which was not crowded and very clean, particularly given the number of people. Its caf? was also an excellent idea and being able to go in from the Spa area good. Our one disappointment was with the hotel which somehow didnt quite live up to its billing, service was slow, the pool/leisure area was grubby and whilst the staff were friendly they never really managed to deliver the service we expected from a 4 star establishment. It did not ruin our trip just took the edge off what we expected to be a really good hotel choice. Not especially great value for money.

out of 5We spent a day in Bath after spending the Bank Holiday weekend with our son and his partner in Nailsea, near Bristol. Bath was its usual attractive self, though crowded, not unexpectedly, on the Bank Holiday. One irritant, though, were the signs to the Park & Ride, which proclaimed "Monday to Saturday" as operating days. Well, not on Bank Holiday Monday in August, nor, I guess, on any other Bank Holiday! Why on earth they can't say so and avoid visitors having to drive several fruitless miles, I can't imagine. We didn't actually sample the newly refurbished thermal baths but from the outside they looked promising and the information bit was good. Next time, maybe, we'll take a dunk, though it's not cheap, especially if you want the full works!

With free parking and a return fare of 2.20, it is great value.Even with a few hilly parts, Bath is a genuinely easy walking destination - even for such as I who cannot manage too many gradients.Had I not been showing a German visitor the sights and sites of the area, I could easily have spent a couple of days without leaving the hotel and it's facilities.

out of 5I would reccommend the best way to explore Bath is to first go on the city site seeing bus so you get an idea of the locations of different points of interest, but you must then go by foot to get a true sense and scale of the fantastic Georgian architecture and history. The Royal Crescent and Circus were particulally interesting. One tip to remember is your bus ticket is valid for 2 days, so the second day you could go on the other tour which takes you into the hills above the city, where you have great birds eye views. The free walking tour was one of the best parts of our short trip even though it was non stop rain all day! The guide was fun, friendly and extremely knowledgable. There was an intersting mix of nationalities in our tour group, American, Dutch, Australian, Canadian, Irish. In fact we were the only British people on the tour! It was refreshing though as it makes you feel proud that people from all around the world are interested and want to experience our history. The Jane Austen Centre was a bit of a disappointment. Theres not a lot to see unfortunately. One other thing we found starnge was the lack of locals, nearly everyone was a tourist!! I expect it is due to the fact that none of the houses in the city are worth anything under a million so locals tend to live on the outskirts.I would reccomnend that a long weekend is enough time to explore Bath as it is a lot smaller than I imagined and one you have seen the architecture there is not a lot else to do unless you venture just outside to Stone Henge or visit the Cotswold villages

out of 5We had a most enjoyable time in Bath There are plenty of eating places catering for every taste. The Abbey Hotel was very nice & such a good location, our room was very nice, newly decorated, sunny & very clean. Because of the location it can be a little noisy but you would probably get that wherever you stayed within the City Centre, the tall buildings are made for shouting, it echos & the younger element enjoyed this passtime. The Bizzare Bath Comedy Trip was such a surprise it takes place every night at 8pm, it was so funny, lots of people & jolly good exercise. Would recommend it. All the normal attractions in Bath were not a disappointment, if the sunshines it makes it even better. Only downside Bath Council could do more with regards to cleaning up the pavements a bit, they were dirty. Car parking was not too bad once you get a spot you do have to feed the meter every morning until 7pm & it cost £12.50 from 8am -7pm, cheaper on Sundays but not free.

We enjoyed meandering around the city which is very picturesque and popping into shops and cafes. The hotel we stayed at was in a good central location and we had a nice sized room which was very clean. From outside the hotel we were able to pick up the tour bus which showed you all the places to visit. The highlight of our visit was probably our trip to Longleat as we both love animals. The funniest part was seeing the monkeys climbing on the car in front of us! The one thing I did miss out on was having a massage at the new spa as I did not book.

The only real downside was there was no parking actually at the hotel, so we had to use a public car par 100 yds or so round the corner - but £11 per day.

The Roman Baths are steeped in history and cannot be missed. Don't bother with the city bus tour though, it doesn't really add any value to the trip, you are best off taking a stroll along the beautiful georgian streets and discovering it for yourself.

out of 5Our weekend started when I collected my friend, Debbie, from the station in Bath. We arrived at the hotel to find that the hotel had no record of our booking - not a great start, and instead of contacting Superbreak, the person on reception said she needed to see our booking confirmation. We had unfortunately left this in the car and were told to go and get it "right now" - then said that we couldn't check in until 3.00 anyway...After this had all been sorted out we had a great time looking around the city, which was well known to me - Debbie had never been there before. Highlights were the Roman baths - extraordinary, and Sally Lunn's, which is a real piece of history, combined with great food and friendly service - a snack from there will set you up for a whole day's sightseeing with no hunger pangs! When we left the hotel we saw the same person - we weren't asked if we'd enjoyed our stay or even how our room was - I feel very sad if this is generally the sort of welcome and lack of care demonstrated. Bath is a fantastic city and deserves better representation. I'm marking the final question as OK, but that's referring to the hotel, not the city!

They are loud, agressive, foul-mouthed, and the city would be much better without them. More police on duty late at night as the city can be a bit scary then. The anti-social behaviour and drunkedness are very off putting, and I would like to see the Police take a zero tolerance approach to it, both for the tourists and the respectable decent inhabitants of Bath and North Somerset.
