The hotel was excellent, the facilities was a bonus and it was a good location to stay as we were going to a wedding in peckforton. The meal in the restaurant was good but the breakfast in the morning which was a cooked breakfast was cold.

Great For Golf

A customerfrom UKwho stayed at this hotel wrote this review.

Stay Date: 21/05/11

Overall Hotel Rating:

4 out of 5

Our main reason for choosing this hotel was to play golf. When we arrived there was no-one on reception and no call button while we were waiting a member of staff passed by and although it was obvious we were waiting just ignored us - eventually i had to go and find a member of staff in the bar to come and help us. Once we got to our room it was very clean and quiet - it was also very spacious - the only thing lacking was a view we overlooked the carpark! recpetion was keen to make sure we used the inclusive leisure facilities - a pool, 2 steam rooms 2 saunas and an ice room all were very well maintained and clean great way to unwind. We found the bar menu for the evening to be very limited but there are a number of great pubs nearby so good excuse to get out and explore the area. We were very impressed with the championship golf course - staying at the hotel gives you preferential rates and we were able to book a very early tee-time so practically had the course to ourselves for the first 9 holes. It was well maintained and beautifully landscaped making it a pleasure to play on - although some very tricky water hazards. Loved the cabins on the course with toilets and vending machines - and the mobile vending buggy who came round with food and drinks. We will certainly be back here again.

Great break in Cheshire

We stayed at the McDonald Portal Golf and Spa Hotel for 3 nights. It was by far one of the best hotels we have stayed in! Leisure facilities were fab and staff were so helpful. Breakfasts were excellent. The hotel is in a beautiful location on the outskirts of Tarporley a beautiful village about 10 miles out of Chester. It is ideal for visiting Chester shops, zoo and only an hours drive into Wales. The rooms were huge and extremely clean. The hotel is only 2 years old and the spa is really good and prices are reasonable. The pool is extremely good for the children as the depth is 1.2m the whole length. Our children (aged 8 and 9) also enjoyed the showers around the pool as they had drench, cold and fragrance. The ice room/steam rooms/saunas were all very clean and not busy.We did not eat at the hotel but tried local pubs in the area, the best one we found at Beeston on the main road oppoisite the railway line (think it was called The Castle). Good choice of menu and prices good (especially for families and they have senior citizen menus too). We went to Chester Zoo which we all really enjoyed and took a picnic to the local locks to watch the narrow boats. We also had a day on the beach in Llandudno. All in all an excellent break and we will definitely return.
