out of 5Booking into the hotel just after 2.30 went sight seeing, took in the cathedral, the market place & shops. Returned to hotel for a shower & rest before walking around the market place again to find somewhere to eat. Hotel satisfactory although we thought we had left the main building as we were as far back as you could get...

out of 5We decided to give up on camping due to the weather and chose Chesterfield as we had never tried the Peak District before and it was easy to drive to. We (Me, wife and two boys aged 7 and 12) were pleasantly surprised by this hotel. In the Art deco style it was a big hotel with lots of function rooms. The shared public spaces had seen better days but I should imagine the upkeep is difficult due to its size. The rooms were very comfortable and very clean but wallpaper a bit worse for wear. I found the beds very comfortable and the hotel put us on the quiet side as requested. I should imagine it would be very noisy on the side facing the dual carriageway. Window restrictors were in place (always a concern with children) On the whole our stay here was pleasant, the Hotel has a very friendly atmosphere and the staff were very nice. Breakfast was good too half buffet and half served and we enjoyed it on both days. There was a small bar open when we stayed there but we didn't use it much as it was expensive and it would have been impossible to eat dinner in the hotel with the children due to the restrictive price-however there is a wetherspoons not too far away. Chesterfield is very nice and the market particularly good although both myself and my husband felt uneasy returning to the hotel at night as the centre is quite lonely. We stayed in a more modern four star hotel in Derby after this visit ans we all agreed that on balance we prefered the Chesterfield because it felt more homely, welcoming and had more character.Very very good value hotel ans a good base to visit local attractions but eat out to save money and request a quiet room.
