About Manon - Ballet

Based on the 1731 novel by Abbé Prévost, Manon the Ballet is an intense and emotional production telling the story of a love affair between Manon and Des Grieux.

Set in 18th century Paris, Manon the ballet follows Manon, a flirtatious young girl as she flits between true love with a poor young student and wealth as a rich man’s mistress. Convinced by her corrupt brother to become the mistress of Monsieur GM, Manon breaks Des Grieux heart as she places her greed above her love for him.

Reluctant to give up her wealth Manon persuades Des Grieux to cheat at cards and gain some wealth for the two of them, caught they go on the run but as greed overcomes her Manon is deported and imprisoned. Follwed by her young student until her dying day.

Manon the ballet saw its world premiere at the Royal Opera House in 1974, the current production will play there from the 3rd November 2011 to the 26th November 2011. Manon the ballet was choreographed by Kenneth MacMillan.
