About An Ideal Husband
Although written in 1895, An Ideal Husband is still as sharp, witty and poignant today as it has ever been. Oscar Wilde’s dark comedic play delves into the ever present realms of blackmail, political corruption and there affects on social morality. However, although intense and dramatic, the play still retains somewhat of a light-hearted tone and leaves the audience feeling satisfied and uplifted. An Ideal Husband is the story of Sir Robert Chiltern, a government minister who has a successful career, a fine home and a loving wife. Yet all is not well when one Mrs Chevelye arrives on the scene and threatens to ruin Sir Robert with revelations of his dark past. In order to stop these shocking revelations, Sir Robert seeks out the help of the apparently idle philanderer and despair of his family, Lord Goring.
Oscar Wilde’s brilliantly clever play then follows the life of Sir Robert over the next 48 hours, during which time he must try to save his life from complete ruin. Full of shocking secrets, exciting twists and gripping drama, An Ideal Husband is a thrilling tale of intrigue.
With fabulous designs by Stephen Brimson Lewis, superb direction by Lindsay Posner and excellent performances from the entire cast, this version of An Ideal Husband breathes new life into one of Wilde’s most revered plays.
