out of 5We went to Gibraltar on the basis that it was as far south in europe as you can go and we needed a winter break. It is a very cosmopolitan place and make sure you enjoy as many of the different cultures as you can. The small jewish cafe where we had a light lunch was very friendly with good food and family ambience. The gardens and nature reserve were very interesting and, due to the prime location of the Rock Hotel, we visited these areas very day and always saw something different. Many of the aloes were in flower with nectar feeding birds in evidence. The local buses are frequent and can get you to most parts of Gibraltar very cheaply (and you meet the local people who are charming and helpful). It's worth staying in the Rock Hotel for its edwardian feel and its "poirot-esque" looks - even the sign "The Rock Hotel" reminds you of the title sequences of the David Suchet tv series! All in all a good experience and well worth repeating in March/April when the major bird migrations are visible across the straits of Gibraltar.

Gibralter Break

out of 5Visiting Gibralter is like being at home, only sunnier & cheaper! Everyone speaks English, the pound is the local currency and the shopping is fabulous. We went on a dolphin safari (?20) and saw the bottle-nosed dolphins leaping out of the water. A truly magical experience. We also walked across the boarder into Spain to visit the huge local Wednesday morning market in La Linea. Plenty of bargains to be had but don`t forget your Euros & passport! We stayed at the Rock Hotel. It is a throw back to colonial times and is a restful and comfortable place to stay. Not everyone likes Gibraltar, but we love it and go every year. Try it. You might be surprised.Dinner overlooking the harbour with expensive yachts bobbing in the breeze
