out of 5This was our third visit to Durham for the annual miners' gala. Every year is full of music, memories and (ex)miners. In general, Durham really welcomes visitors and we couldn't fault the taxi drivers, the eating and drinking establishments or the people who line the streets in all weathers. If you haven't been to one of these events, you should. We stayed at the travelodge, durham, because the premier inn would only accept bookings for two nights or more; understandable on a busy weekend, but inconvenient. The travelodge is a healthy walk from the city centre, but conveniently placed for the main roads. Rooms are clean, tidy and more than adequate for a one night stop. There is an italian restaurant on site, very handy for a quick pinot grigio while waiting for a taxi! we found the taxi drivers to be prompt, courteous and very helpful. £5 for three people to avoid the rain seemed a bargain! all of our group shared their experiences and a variety of tex-mex and indian meals were consumed, as well as delicious real ale at the market tavern and the head of steam. No complaints anywhere.
