Good Location let down by poor service.
Stay Date: December 2014 , London-Phil , London, United Kingdom
I would like to state at this point dear reader that the following review should be read in the context and knowledge of how I came to spend a solitary night at … Read More the Crowne Plaza Heathrow therefore, you may reasonably expect if not hope for a wholly different experience to the one I sadly endured on New Years Eve, 2014. Tobegin with, it was not my choice of abode but the choice of Thai Airways as approximately 150 of us had been decanted to the seemingly unsuspecting and evidentlyunprepared Crowne Plaza after our plane had developed a fault on the runway, this on route to Bangkok. In fact, it was nearly three hours after our scheduled departuretime that we actually walked through the doors of the CP and the inevitable process of queuing for rooms began and boy, did we queue! The fact that there were onlytwo operatives on desk duty who both appeared to be on a visible go-slow certainly didn't help matters. They were so slow in allocating rooms that it became a neartortuous experience, culminating in a wait of just over 60 minutes to initially register and receive my key. I say initially as I would be forced to queue again whenit was explained to me by a now frantic barman that I needed to attach a credit card to the room in order to purchase anything from the bar, annoyingly, this smalldetail was omitted from the conversation when first registering. Overall, I spent nearly 100 minutes in line, not really the way you want to spend New Years Eve! For the purpose of expediency, I will fast forward to the main plus & minus points jotted down whilst there in the hope you may find them useful. Plus Points. TheHotel is close to the Airport and in that regard, very convenient for stopovers. The rooms are box-like but what else would you expect and more over, generally cleanand tidy. The breakfast was a bit of a mixed bag but, what was on offer was adequate and overall, rather good as long as you were prepared to serve yourself withteas/coffee's etc as well as clean the odd table as many were still stacked with used plates from long departed breakfast guests. I would also like to say I felt theservers tried hard to accommodate and forfill their brief but… Minus Points There just weren't enough servers and repeated requests for Tea and toast appeared togo unanswered. In the end I decided to serve myself, hardly then a glowing recommendation for the Crowne Plaza brand. In an attempt to ascertain whether the reasonfor the poor service was a capacity issue, I enquired from one of the servers as to how full the hotel was assuming maybe a 90-95% response but no, 60-70% only Iwas told. I also have to say the main Server was very sympathetic to my query but it was soon obvious that it just came down to the lack of staff on the pass. Themini bar was also poorly stocked and there were no ‘real’ munchies available either which I soon discovered when told the kitchen had closed on arrival. This meant Iwas forced to go hungry for over 8 hours till breakfast on New Years Day as we had been due to fly at 21:30 NYE, and nothing had been offered by Thai Airway'sduring that whole period. As I was understandably unhappy over the way I had been treated by both Thai Airway's and Crowne Plaza, I decided to speak directly withNicolas Braud, The Hotel Manager, the following day before leaving. Whilst sympathetic to my plight, Mr Braud complained himself that the night duty staff had beenexpecting just the "one" coach-load of passengers and not the 3 or 4 that eventually turned-up and therefore, were consequently unprepared for the extra demand placed onthem for both rooms and late service. He also apologised for the clear error made by the booking clerk when not informing me that a credit card was required forbar and hotel purchases. It subsequently came to light that there was only the one experienced reservations operator working that evening, the young lady who was alsoon the desk was apparently, still learning the ropes. (?) I won't labour the point further but clearly, taking my previous comments over the general lack of serviceinto consideration, I cannot but be disappointed with the Crowne Plaza as it was a pretty rubbish way to begin a holiday and overall, a pretty poor experience ingeneral. As to the question of whether I would recommend a stay when in transit or on business? Difficult to say as this was NOT the very worst hotel I've had themisfortune to stay at whilst waiting for a flight but, in truth, unless the price quoted for such a stopover was so hugely attractive or even free as was my case, Iwould probably look elsewhere for my temporary bed. Happy travelling. :-) Collapse
