Disappointing, but I want to like it.
Stay Date: April 2016 , Breadbird , Toronto, Canada
I want to like this apartment hotel but they're making it difficult. I quite like the location about half a mile from Angel tube station, where there are … Read More supermarkets, pubs and transit to everywhere in London. It might not be the best location for first-time visitors to London. Across the street from the hotel is a small co-opwhich is handy for most everything you would need. Security is quite tight at the gate to the hotel. Staff were welcoming. It was a long long walk from the frontdesk to our apartment and involved a few stairs. A lift took us to the 2nd floor. That was the last we saw of the lift. The next day it was out of order and stayedthat way for the two weeks we were there. (We had to laugh when a notice came around apologizing that the lift would be out for routine maintenance for four hours - ithadn't worked for a week before that, and didn't work afterwards, either, The apartment (no. 44) had an odd configuration but the annoying thing was the doors whichare hung so as to close automatically. Of course we propped the chairs against them to keep them open, but this was particularly annoying in the tiny closet-likekitchen where the garbage can was only thing to keep it open. The kitchen itself had the minimal basics in plates and cutlery, but curiously nothing like an oven mitt.We had to buy a few things. The oven was challenging and came without instructions, but I`ve stayed in many of these places and finally mastered it. Some lightsdidn`t work in the kitchen and the bathroom, and the bathroom fan didn`t work but they fixed these things when we complained. The living-dining area was spacious thoughthe dining room chairs were on the verge of falling apart and needed some serious glue work. The bedroom was fine. The bed was hard, but some people prefer that(unfortunately I don`t). Our apartment would have been very quiet with little street noise if it weren`t for the Saturday night that management allowed a very noisyparty with loud music to go on and on until about 2 a.m. There is free wifi in the building if you are lucky enough to connect to it, which is very difficult andrequires patience. At busy times of day (early evening, for example) it tosses you off entirely. We, too, fell for the great washing machine scam. The first time we usedit it took them two days to come and open the door. But then it was supposed to be fixed. Foolish me - I believed them and did another load. This time my clotheswere trapped for two days and when they had someone take the door off of course the clothes were sopping wet. They did bring us a drying rack but we didn`t take achance on the machine again. The washing machine and the wifi were a big part of our choice of this facility. At first they said we could use a machine in anotherapartment, but then it turned out they were fully booked. That`s revealing because if they can be fully booked most of the time with such poor service and attention todetail they there`s not much incentive to improve. Mostly the staff were pleasant and tried to help, with one exception. Often there is no one at the desk to answer thephone because the desk staff also must show you to your room in a confusing building. The facility and rooms are very clean, and housekeeping should be complimented. There are no toiletries provided except liquid hand soap, but there is dishwashing liquid and soap for the washing machine (ha ha). The bathroom towels are skimpyand you end up using the hand towels to dry the dishes. It would have been nice if someone could have offered to help us with our heavy suitcases when we left sincethe lift was still our of order. Collapse
