Barcelo Imperial Hotel, Torquay

Overall Hotel Rating:

Locals recommended the Imperial, the Grand or the Palace hotels. We liked the location of the imperial and the deal with Superbreak was the best we could find for this hotel. When we checked in our room wasn't ready so they gave us a free upgrade. Only one word describes it - wow! super king room and a super king bed. Fantastic views over Torbay - day and night. We were so lucky with the weather that we slept with balcony doors open, listening to the sea. Facilities are good (outdoor pool wasn't open as too early in the year). Breakfast is good: fruits, cereals, pastries, yoghurt, toast and full breakfast - although you have to order vegetarian sausages, or other forms of eggs; would have been nice to have mushrooms too. Tea and coffee is given cup by cup and is freshly stewed rather than brewed. Would be nice to be able to have a pot, or to make it yourself. Dinners on the hb basis are excellent. The food is to a very high quality. It was a shame that the meat free option isn't labelled vegetarian (not always the same thing!). I believe other dietary requirements can be met if you ask in advance. Given that the dinner was a bit short of £30, the Superbreak deal really is worth every penny. Torquay itself seems to have changed a lot. Many of the places in the town centre are the same in any town. Hoopers, Torquay's department store, is a cut above the rest. Even if you can only browse the items for sale, the coffee shop/ restaurant upstairs is worth a visit. Fayre includes freshly made scones with clotted cream! Torquay is a good base for trips. Although I didn't have time, you can do a day trip on a steam train, with a boat up the river Dart, a visit to greenaway (Agatha Christie's house just opened by the national trust), and a bus back to Torquay. Trips can also be taken by boat across tor bay to Brixham.

Short Spring Break

I visited the Imperial Barcelo in Torquay with a friend last week (March 2010) and had a fabulous time. The room had exquisite views over the whole English riveria and sunsets were magical from our balcony. The hotel's staff were noticably friendly and helpful; nothing was too much trouble for them. I would highly recommend this hotel and it was a very good value for money, inclusive package, through Superbreak. Thank you.

One Night In Torquay

A customerfrom Barnstaple Devonwho stayed at this hotel wrote this review.

Overall Hotel Rating:

Our aim on this one night break in Torquay was to find out as much about Agatha Christie's link with the town. We arrived at the Imperial hotel at mid day as our room was ready. We had a nice afternoon, starting with a fish and chip lunch then walking the Agatha Christie mile and ended with a visit to the museum. Our package included evening meal and the food was very good. The hotel was very clean but in need of an update. The next morning, after a good breakfast, we spent the morning at Torre abbey and a wonderfull afternoon at Greenway the house of the late Agatha Christie. A busy but enjoyable one night break.
