Indulgent Interlude in Inverurie

Overall Hotel Rating:
out of 5Taking advantage of Superbreak's '2 Night Wine and Dine' offer at Thainstone House Hotel near Inverurie had seemed a really good idea at the time. The thought of time and space to relax, swim, be pampered and fed sumptuous repasts was very atractive, and the reality lived up to the expectation. The hotel had an old-fashioned elegance and charm and the staff were most attentive. Thainstone was the perfect base for our break, as we intended to catch up with old friends in Inverurie. Driving around the countryside gave opportunities to appreciate the beautiful, pastoral scenery and being with friends who lived locally brought the chance to visit some unpublicised stately homes. We visited a cleverly converted church in Inverurie where the congregation have created a trendy cafe and shopping space underneath the Sanctuary and had lunch in The Fennel, an upmarket restaurant tucked away in a side street. Our journey home to Glasgow led us past Dunnottar Castle, via Stonehaven, and since it isn't really possible to 'pass by' a castle of this stature, we had to stop, pay our £5 and climb down and up into the ruins to explore. It was fascinating to see that of all the historic events that have taken place within the castle, the one event that is commemmorated is the martyrdom of over 100 Covenanters within its walls during the reign of Charles II. All in all, we had a successful and relaxing break and I have no doubt that we shall return.
