Amiens is a city not lacking in charm, situated on the beautiful banks of the Somme River and famous for its French Gothic architectural purity. Visit The Somme, the site of many great battles in World War I and home to a number of military cemeteries. The town of Albert is remembered today as the site of the Battle of the Somme in World War I.

out of 5We went to the Somme valley with only the barest knowledge of the battles named after it. Five days later we had a better grasp of the events and human tragedy than could ever have come from a school history lesson. Nobody could leave the area unmoved by the numerous neat cemeteries, large and small, filled with memorials to the sons of the combatant nations on both sides of the conflict. It is all the more poignant when one considers the small gains and losses of territory involved.L'hotel Royal-Picardie, Albert is the ideal base for exploring the First World War battlefields of the Somme valley. The staff could not have been friendlier or more helpful. Not only did they speak good English, they understand it - not always the same thing. The quality of the food is excellent but the menu could benefit from more variety and some lighter dishes for those with smaller appetites or on diets. It did not affect us but the menu made no provision for children.
