Hotel Russell

Stay Date: 17/10/09, a customer who stayed at 5* The Principal London in Russell Square wrote this review.

'Would you like an upgrade for £20 per night' the Receptionist asked as we checked in. Rather taken aback, we declined. The 4* Hotel Russell is something of an institution: set in the heart of See More  Read more information Bloomsbury, it represents comfort and gentility from a bygone era. The grand entrance gleams with marble, curving staircases and sparkling chandeliers. Jet-lagged travellers sink into leather armchairs asthey nod off over the Daily Telegraph. But, where is the bell boy, the porter? What lies behind the opulent facade of this recently refurbished Victorian treasure. The standard room to which we hauledour luggage was small, well appointed, but completely devoid of the cosy indulgence promised by the public areas. The bed was also small, not even queen size, and in a 4* hotel this is barelyacceptable. After a restless night in stuffy, cramped conditions, breakfast arrived promptly, but a whacking £10 tray charge for room service somewhat spoiled the treat. Guests in a 4* hotel have the rightto expect 4* standards throughout the establishment, not only in the public areas. With the benefit of hindsight, we ought to have changed rooms, but, not being people to fuss and also because we werebusy attending the Opera and Art Exhibitions, we decided to let it go.   Collapse  Hide

Hotel Russell - Outstanding

Stay Date: 30/01/10, a customer from Crediton who stayed at 5* The Principal London in Russell Square wrote this review.

What an amazing hotel. From the moment we pulled up we knew we were in for a treat. Opulence, decadence, beauty - just a few words to sum up the exterior and interior. Such was the beauty of the See More  Read more information staircase we rarely used the lifts. The room was massive and airy and the bathroom spacious, clean and tidy. Fitzroy Dolls was an outstanding restaurant with the food delightful, service friendly andswift and cost reasonable. The breakfast was equally delightful. You'd struggle to get a better location for a hotel. Away from the hustle and bustle of central London, yet within walkable distance ofmany an attractions and excellently placed on the Piccadily line which gives quick access to the likes of Oxford Street, Kensington and the museums. Bloomsbury was a lovely area with Russell Square alovely area in which to relax and the nearby Brunswick centre providing ample opportunity for shopping and eating (including a large waitrose). I could go on and on and on, but in summary don'tdeliberate about booking, do it now. You won't be disappointed!!!.   Collapse  Hide

Lovely Long Weekend In London

Stay Date: 05/03/10, a customer who stayed at 5* The Principal London in Russell Square wrote this review.

The Russell hotel is well worth the little extra you pay for your stay. This hotel is a real slice of London's history and despite it's age, it's rooms are beautifully appointed and well equipped See More  Read more information for today's traveller. The grand staircase is just made for a lady to float down in a cloud of taffeta and diamonds, but instead I clumped down in jeans and boots. But it's not a stuffy place, the staffare helpful, friendly and courteous. The hotel is a short walk from the British museum and is one of the reasons we choose to stay there every time we visit London. This museum has, literally, something for everyone, no matter what your hobbies and interests are and it's well worth checking out the special exhibitions that are on for your stay. The Natural History museum is a wonderful place topass the day and it's easy to navigate. Go see the dinosaurs! The Imperial War museum is a fascinating place and well worth the effort of getting there. As someone who isn't old enough to remember theworld wars I found it informative and thought provoking to see how people's lives were lived in times of such challenges. The conditions that the soldiers endured daily gave me a much greaterunderstanding of the sacrifices they made.   Collapse  Hide
