Athens Holiday Reviews

Athens Skyline, Athens, Greece

Athens is the capital of Greece and one of the most famous cities in the world. This ancient city of learning is filled with spectacular ancient monuments and artworks, the most famous of all being the Parthenon on the Acropolis.

Athens International Airport is one of the busiest in southern Europe and with over 70 flights per week from London airports alone, booking your break to the Greek capital couldn't be easier! The airport is served by buses and metro links to Athens city centre or you could add an airport taxi transfer to take you direct to your hotel door.

  • Piraeus is the port of Athens and the largest passenger port in Europe. It is a frequent destination for Mediterranean cruises and it is also the departure point for ferry services to the Greek islands. There are also a number of restaurants specializing in seafood as well as traditional Greek tavernas.
  • The Parthenon is Athens' most popular tourist site and one of the most recognizable buildings in the world. Located within the Acropolis of Athens on a rocky hill high above the city, this ancient Greek monument has stood for over two thousand years. The modern Acropolis Museum houses many of the statues that once stood in the Parthenon as well as other ancient Greek artefacts.
  • The National Archaeological Museum is the world's largest collection of artefacts from the ancient world. Of course the museum is mainly devoted to Greek antiquity but also includes an impressive collection from ancient Egypt. Highlights include the golden Mask of Agamemnon, wall frescoes from Santorini and artefacts from ancient Sparta.
There is plenty more to do in this vibrant Mediterranean city, sip cocktails on trendy Asteras beach as the waters of the Saronic Gulf lap at your feet, watch the elaborate changing of the guard ceremony at Syntagma Square or maybe even take in a football match at Olympiacos, Panathinaikos or AEK!

A week in Athens

Stay Date: 21/10/08, a customer from Harrow who stayed at 3* Plaka Hotel in Athens (Greece) wrote this review.

The Plaka hotel has perhaps the best position for a tourist in Athens. Plenty to do and see within short walking distances.. even the Acropolis(although uphill). Its worth going up Mt Lycabattus but See More  Read more information its a job to find the funicular if on foot. The sightseeing bus 400 is not very good for actual sightseeing but ok for hop-on/hop-off. Metro system very good and cheap.80cents for 90 minutes,butEuro7 to the airport, which is easy to get to.   Collapse  Hide
