out of 5We stayed at the The Winchester Hotel. We were disappointed from the moment we arrived as we had reserved 2 rooms and only one was allocated. They found another room which turned out to be very smoky; eventually they gave us a reasonable room. The lunch service in the hotel was very slow. Overall the hotel was poor, poor service, average rooms, noisy late at night, maze of dark corridors - need I continue. Avoid this one! Winchester city centre was pleasant with a good range of shops and restaurants.

out of 5We visit Winchester two or three times a year, it has a good shopping centre, and good restaurants and bars. We no longer visit the many tourist attractions, but would recommend them as being of great interest historically.The hotel is right in the hub, which is why we chose it (others are available). We booked at the last minute, and the room though spotlessly clean was very small, overlooking a flat roof and the rear of a large department store (in dire need of some TLC in our opinion). Lighting was seriously dim, because of the low-energy lamps now required by law (opticians should be delighted). The wardrobe was so stuffed with equipment there was barely room to hang clothes, and certainly no room for our big winter coats, which we used to hide the one shabby armchair (that had to be moved in order to open the chest of drawers behind it).
