A Weekend in Edinburgh
A customer from SELBY who stayed at this hotel wrote this review.
Stay Date: 08/02/13
Overall Hotel Rating:
out of 5Edinburgh is a great place to spend a weekend but just be aware that many of the shops don't open on a Sunday. Just strolling around the Old Town is a wonderful experience. Admission to the castle is a rip-off at £14.50 a head. We'll go back in summer so that we can walk up Arthur's Seat. The Waverley Hotel was convenient but below standard - noisy, a bit scruffy and a very small room. We ate at La Lanterna, which is a superb old-style, family-run Italian restaurant in Hanover Street - but book in advance because it's very popular.

Fantastic 40th Weekend for Two
A customer who stayed at this hotel wrote this review.
Stay Date: 27/10/12
Overall Hotel Rating:
out of 5An amazing weekend for two. No hassle with driving or parking as we had rail tickets included in our deal. Brilliant location of the hotel, central to everything with an amazing view and gorgeous breakfast!! Lots of things to do in this historical city, although two days is no where near enough to see everything as well as sample the lots and lots and lots of amazing traditional pubs too. Had a fabulous time and saved massively by booking as a package compared to seperately. Would highly recommend, however do take some good walking boots!!

out of 5Arrived in Edinburgh by train Friday afternoon and hotel was ideally placed across the road from the station. The hotel was very comfortable and the breakfast very good .However, the service was poor overall with not enough staff in the dining area.Visited some great attractions including the castle,Edinburgh Dungeons and Mary King's Close.Definately some scary places to visit here. The old town was a joy to walk round and was very cosmopoliton and welcoming. had some great pub meals and lots of fun tasting the different wiskeys. The weekend ended far too quickly but would certainly recommend Edinburgh to anyone and look forward to our next visit as far too much to see in one weekend.

out of 5The Old Waverley Hotel, excellent location on Princes Street and only minutes from the station when laden with luggage. Handy for getting out and about each day on the guided tours or under your own steam. The area seemed a rather poor for eating out at non chain restuarants at sensible prices

out of 5Old Waverley Hotel very central just across road from Waverley Station. Pleasant room and staff very polite. A bit noisy, breakfast very good. Edinburgh is a beautiful city and very easy to get around - most places can be comfortably reached on foot although some fairly steep gradients. Highly recommendable

out of 5The hotel room was top floor, corner, looking down princess street and the scott monument. Of all the rooms in edinburgh, there couldn't be better open top bus a good way to get your bearings. Leave over half a day for the castle. National gallery thought provoking and free. Too much to see for a short break, we'll have to come back. All food was really good and not excessively expensive.

out of 5We booked the hotel and train through Superbreak and were astounded at the great value of their prices. Our hotel was right on princes st and we had the biggest room on the floor which was beautifully decorated, also overlooking the famous jenners department store and with views of the gorgeous castle. The only downside was some irritating noises from a room next door early in the night but they passed quickly. Breakfast was a basic buffet but a good enough start to the day. We managed to take in all the major tourist attractions in Edinburgh in just under three days since the city is so compact to get around. We recommend taking a tourist bus to orient yourself and also going to the stand comedy club if you get the chance! also the outsider restaurant was fantastic!.

out of 5The old waverly was old and tired, the room i stayed in was bijou(small), the bed was a large single (they sold it as a double). It was convenient for the center of Edinburgh close to the station, breakfast was ok. The sausages were done from frozen in the oven and were served not cooked properly. However the haggis was excellent. An average stay at best.

A lovely hotel and the room was lovely, only complaint is that we were at the back of the hotel and the bottle banks were just outside our room, which was niosy during the night...Had no phone line either so had to ring on my mobile for room service and then physically go down to reception to order food from their 24hr menu, only to be told that it wasn't available...Eventually it arrived....Spoilt the hotel....

out of 5Be warned if you are not agile the reception/entrance to the old waverley hotel is up several stairs. Our room on 5th floor (by lift thank goodness) was reasonable size, comfortable but lacked decent drawer storage. Breakfast self-service. Dinner good and staff helpful. For those less agile and without transport we found the tour buses excellent value and our only way of seeing the city which is very hilly with lots of steps. My main criticism is edinburgh tourist board website which is rubbish for new visitors giving little current event information.

out of 5I was so happy with our short break that i wanted to write a review (i would never usually do this). We booked 2 nights and train tickets through Superbreak- i was a bit anxious about the train ticket as it said we could just hop on any leeds to edinburgh train which i didnt quite believe ...However.. This was true..We chose our train and jumped on with no problem with ticket types etc. Our hotel was ideally located and we were impressed with the hotels services..We did have a slightly sloped bedroom and a slightly noisy bathroom fan (we think) when the light was on but for the price we paid we were very impressed. We would definatley book through Superbreak again.

out of 5We arrived when Edinburgh was a winter wonderland. Our hotel was warm and welcoming. All the staff were friendly and helpful especially when we had to organise an extra nights stay because of the weather. I will stay there again. We came to visit my daughter who has just started at Edinburgh university. It is a beautiful city made more so by the snow, and german market in princes gardens. The views from our hotel window were stunning. We went to specialist shops around the grassmarket and to the museums and art galleries. Can't wait to come back.

out of 5A lovely warm welcoming hotel, unfortunately not easily accessible for people with disabilties as there are a few small flights of stairs to access the reception area from Princes Street. The hotel itself is spotlessly clean with lovely staff, although some of the rooms and the corridors are looking tired. You have great views off Princes Street from the hotel, only our room on the sixth floor looked out onto a side street. Can't fault the breakfast as they can't do enough to keep you happy. Didn't eat any other meals in the hotel as all restaurants and pubs are esily accessible from the hotel. Overall a very pleasant stay except when the fire alarm went off around midnight, when someone in the kitchen left the toaster on. By the time we made our way down from the sixth floor with an elderly crippled lady who was in the next room to us, a false alarm had been verified and people were filing back into the hotel. No roll call was taken and neither did the fire brigade turn out which suggests that they are not linked up as the alarm was sounding for quite some time. A good value for money hotel that is situated with in walking distance of the main railway station and all attractions.-

out of 5We only spent 2 night in Edinburgh. The Old Waverley Hotel is the perfect spot for getting about the city. Arrived early afternoon went shopping. Ate at Tiles Pub (exellent food and good service) Disappointed we didn't have time to eat at the hotel, this was due to our visit to the theatre. Would highly recommend a visit to The Playhouse Theatre we saw Mary Poppin and a visit to Mary Kings Close is a must, our guide made it interesting and fun. Wished we had booked for 2 nights as there is lots to do.

out of 5The word "convenient" was made for The Old Waverley. We arrived into Waverley Station and within a couple of minutes walk were in the hotel reception. Our room (414) had a rather attractive turret window that looked straight down Princess Street. That was more than my wife could bear. She just had to shop!I took the sightseeing bus from just across the street and a tour of Edinburgh Castle. In the evening we met up for dinner at Oloroso - a wonderful restaurant with views from its terrace of The Castle. Back at the hotel we enjoyed a nightcap before going back to the room. Princess Street and the night-views across town were amazing. It was a little noisy, but we felt we were feeling the pulse of this great city and slept rather well. The breakfast buffet included Haggis and set us ready for one last go at the shops before heading back to Cambridge.

out of 5We sing the praises of Lothian Buses. £2.50 for a day ticket: hop on and off, when and where you choose. No.36 meanders from Holyrood to Ocean Terminal, taking in sights, architecture, quirky terraces and parades. On our first evening, we explored the fabulous, beautifully-structured Georgian squares and terraces. It was breathtaking to see the elegant doorways, with steps leading up; the fanlghts spanning the doors; the windowed facade of each house. On our second full day, armed with information from the brochure provided in our hotel, we set off to visit Holyrood; the new Scottish Parliament and Edinburgh Castle.Since Charles and Camilla were staying at Holyrood, we couldn't go inside, but it was reasssuring to witness the level of security present. The new Parliament Building is fantastic. What impressive facades! You could take hours of examing the facades to only begin to understand them. You must see the debating chamber. It will bowl you over. Natural Scottish materials have been used throughout the building and they have a harmonious effect. The cafe also has the best beverages in town. Fab! Value for money and good quality. How often does that happen?

The attractions were all set up for Hogmanay, this gave it a real christmas feel. On the route up to the Royal Mile there is a small restaurant called Ecco Vino which was absolutely fantastic - good food and a lovely atmosphere.
