out of 5We used Superbreak vouchers which had been given to us as birthday presents which is a very functional gift. We arranged our hotel accommodation with Marriott Hotels as they have a good reputation and they lived up to their acclaim. Beamish was an excellent place to visit as it is suitable for any age group. The North East coast is well worth a visit.

out of 5Drove up the coast from Sunderland to Craster and walked along by the sea and on the deserted beaches beyond Dunstanburgh Castle. Caught the Metro into Newcastle, explored the wonderful riverside and visited the Sage, Gateshead and the Baltic via the Millennium Bridge. Top tip- take the Metro and and leave the car behind when travelling into Newcastle.
A Day Out in Newcastle
A customer who stayed at 3* Mercure Newcastle George Washington Hotel Golf & Spa in Washington wrote this review.
Stay Date: 29/07/06
Overall Hotel Rating:
out of 5Stayed at the George Washington Hotel in Washington. Excellent hotel and friendly staff. Decided to get a taxi into Newcastle city Centre as we were going to watch Newcastle football club. This was definitely the best way to get into Newcastle on a busy Saturday morning. The fare was £12. It was very easy to get a return taxi as there are numerous taxi ranks. The football stadium is extremely well organised in terms of organising large crowds. Excellent shops and museums in Newcastle itself. All staff in shops are polite and there is a very friendly feel to the place.

out of 5Had an enjoyable lunch in the hotels conservatory. Hearty sandwiches, pricey but tasty and very filling. Views and environment very relaxing. Had Dinner in the Print room, formal atmostphere, food excellent but tables a bit too close together, pricey but worth it for a special occasion.Spa facilities excellent including a fantastic steam room with LED lights in the ceiling, pool luxurious but did get very busy 10-12, 4-7pm when children were allowed in. Not enough loungers around the pool.We upgraded to a deluxe room from a classic room, cost around an extra £30. Disappointed, the room was in the old part of the hotel, the room had character, beamed ceiling but there was damp on the window frames/sills. It was also cool and the heating could not be altered. My sister visited 3 days later and stayed in a classic room which sounded much more comfortable, clean & warm so suggest not upgrading as the only difference is the size of the room. Very happy with hotel service and amenities apart from the room.

out of 5An overnighter at the North East's contender for friendliest hotel, starts well with a substantial carvery lunch accompanied by a bottle of half price (£23.00) red. Reception is as welcoming as the room which has the bonus of a sea view.Lunch is walked off along the sea front with the cliffs, rocks and smooth sandy beaches contains all the bracing ingredients needed. An undiscovered gem of a location that has to be tested out to be appreciated.A friendly greeting and chat at breakfast sets up the return trip home.

out of 5We visited the Gateshead MetroCentre for a days shopping which was good but tiring. We returned to our hotel to relax and chill out in the leisure facilities. We discovered we had forgot to pack our swimming gear but no problem the pool had a shop and the staff were extremely helpful. After relaxing we headed for the restaurant, the food was lovely even if the choice was slightly limited, my wife had to ask for a chicken dish but again the staff were brilliant. I fully recommend the experience we had to everyone who is looking for a relaxing break

out of 5We stayed at the Derwnt Manor due to its close proximity to Diggerland. On arrival at Diggerland, we were the only customers there due to the local schools' half term being a week later. We had an excellent day out trying out the different diggers and rides including the land rover safari. Well worth a visit.Derwent Manor was a great base to explore the surroundings. Externally, it looked like a mock castle and continued the olde-worlde theme inside. the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Hotel was lovely with spacious, warm, well laid out rooms. We had a meal in the restaurant which was excellent and the breakfasts kept us going all day.The promenade was a very attractive walk despite the cold weather. The taxi drivers were a mine of information and exceptionally pleasant. Could have done with more time to explore this lovely part of England.

out of 5Stayed overnight in the Marriott Hotel Seaburn, Sunderland. We were upgraded to the best room and it was a lovely room. Sadly it was spoilt by the noisy air conditioning which would not go off and kept us awake - despite turning it off at the wall. Complained at the desk the next morning but no apology. Only "We'll get maintenance to fix that before the next people". Er - well what about our sleepless night?

out of 5Matfen hall is a great hotel for a short/long break. Room 3 was a great size for the 3 of us with beautiful views over the golf course. The room itself was very nice although the bathroom I felt was a bit tired! the whole experience is really relaxing, from the pool/spa to having a relaxing drink in the conservatory. The meal was excellent, the whole ambience was just perfect and our waitress (hungarian) was lovely and attentive. Breakfast was good, a great choice, again staff were lovely. My husband and I were at this hotel with our teenage daughter, who loved the hotel and dining experience. I would certainly recommend this hotel, if your thinking of going, just book it!!! Hope to be back soon.

out of 5This hotel was amazing for the value. We had a 2 night stay with breakfast and evening meal for £100 which wouldn't really have covered the food costs for the 3 of us. We got a fantastic room which had a lounge(bedroom for us as we had 3 in the room with our child) bedroom bathroom and so much space. We were also on the beach frount near shops and food places which we didn't visit as one of our party got a tummy bug and spent the stay in bed so just used hotel for food. But a brill place that i will recomend to everyone!.

out of 5Excellent hotel stay in the Best Western Derwent Manor. The room had excellent views over the hills (even better when they're covered in snow!); the room itself was surprisingly large for a 3* hotel - the bed was comfy, good sized and well equipped bathroom, also included tea making facilities. My only criticism would be the television - it could do with updating/not being on the floor! We had dinner in the hotel's bar. Both meals were homemade and tasted delicious, well worth the £22 for two specials! And the staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was equally delicious - cereals and pastries for those like me who don't want the full cooked breakfast (which was available on request). We made good use of the spa; nice little pool and Jacuzzi, very relaxing with the views surrounding it, and a sauna available for use too. There was also a gym but i'm afraid I was too busy chilling out for that! Again the staff were really helpful in the spa, even offered towels if they were needed.Overall a fantastic stay especially for the money - great rooms, great facilities, great customer service. We definitely want to stay again soon, but this time bring our family and friends!

out of 5We used the metro from Sunderland to Newcastle University, a simple experience. Grabbed a quick sandwich before the History Talk. A hurried bit of shopping in an overcrowded Newcastle before metroing back to Sunderland. The Marriott is the friendliest hotel in the UK, so we soon settled in for the England debacle. After that it was a spot of room service and good night. Next morning it was time to pick up the ancient parents ready for the drive home in time for Sunday lunch.

out of 5Typical Marriot - lovely swimming pool. Had a room with a sea view, but fancied the one along the corridor which had big bay windows overlooking the prom. Was in the annex over the car park and so was not disturbed by the wedding party. Had the deal for 2 nights b+b and dinner on the first night and this was very good value at £90. Dinner was excellent, plenty of choice even though table d'hote. Only complaint was that at breakfast on Monday staff were very slow to replenish buffet after the main rush (we went down at 9.10am) and we had a long wait even for things like bread. We had a day out to Hartlepool historic quay. Plenty to occupy children, and not too expensive. Souter lighthouse was also very geared up for children.

out of 5The hotel was average. Good, comfortable beds but the room was noisy due to fans/ heating. Breakfast was ok but not great. Disappointed that breakfast for over 12 year olds was ??10 per person extra and not included with their booking. This seemed to be a very steep price for an average breakfast. Staff were very good. Nice area to visit. Good shopping in the metro centre or newcastle city centre. Durham is a nice place to visit. We were not impressed with beamish museum but you need to visit to decide for yourselves.

We have visited this hotel before and know of its proximity to lots of places to visit. We had a meal on our first night which was one of the best we have had in a hotel.Breakfast was excellent,as usual, which sets you up for the day.
Fantastic Time at Matfen Hall

out of 5We had a fantastic time at Matfen Hall, accommodation was faultless and the spa facilities were great. Only downside was the lack of choice for dining and the price of the drinks was too high. Otherwise superb place in a great location, perfect for a romantic getaway / chilled out break. Would definitely go back again.

out of 5Overall the stay in the hotel was okay. The room was comfortable but in need of some updating. The worst thing was the noise at night. Fire doors and bedroom doors constantly being opened and closed and people making a noise, in other rooms, all through the night. At 4am one morning I even had to complain to the night porter. The noise still continued though. Some friends of mine stayed in another room and heard nothing though. Lucky devils.

out of 5The hotel room was a suprise as my boyfriend and I were given a suite, very large and spacious room however I would not have paid much more for it... Hairs in the sink and shower, left over confetti on the carpet so obviously not vacuumed, just little things like that which spoilt such a beautiful room. The staff at the hotel were very polite to us, but it was obvious we were given preferential treatment as the other guests were not given very good customer service. Apart from that it was a very plesant stay. On the way to the hotel we went to butterfly world which would be great for a family day out, free parking too. We then spent 3hrs at buttercups pottery which was great fun, good value too. On the first day we started off in the hotel swimming pool which was small but very nice. During the day we went to High Force waterfall which was very pretty, we then spent the rest of the day at Sunderland beach, not much to do though if you dont like looking for crabs! On our final day we went to Tynmouth aquarium which was also on the beach which was great fun. Overall a good little holiday.

out of 5My husband and i were celebrating our anniversary, we already had tickets to see hairspray at the Empire Theatre. Great show! the theatre staff were lovely and the performance was top drawer. We stayed in the Marriott Hotel on the beach front. First impressions of the hotel were very good, the hotel is very well equipt very clean, the reception staff were very pleasent. Our room was fabulous, it felt more like a suite, separate sleep area and seating area, bathroom all immaculatley clean. The bed was huge and the bed linen was very special crisp and luxurious. After a very restful nights sleep we were looking forward to breakfast as the information in the room promised a delious choice of food cooked to order or from the extensive hot/continental buffets. Sadly this was not the case, breakfast consisted of a very disapointing buffet.

out of 5Abrupt rude staff and manager, £15 for ice if taken to room, extremely small dinner portions, only two choices on menu, unless you pay supplement in excess of £4.95. No cold water during stay, primitive heating. Large room with views over 20 acres of grounds, impressive building. Derwent reservoir short drive away for a relaxing walk, hexham and corbridge close by. Consett 5 mins away with plenty of bars and clubs. Hotel bar very expensive, swimming pool complex new and clean .
